starting problems

Well if its coughing and backfiring through the carbuerator, then he's definately getting spark. If nothing else changed but the intake was removed, then it's got to be either his timing or his firing order. The distributor has to be removed to do the intake. Either hes got a couple of plug wires to the wrong cylinder or he dropped his distributor back down in the wrong position. Nova, take your time and go through everything that was mentioned.

Good luck with this, it sounds like I have a similar problem with my Probe. You probably need to find TDC on cylinder 1, get the distributor lined up to make the rotor point to the #1 spark plug connector, and make sure the spark plug wires are all hooked up in the right order. If not, ignore this, I'm not an expert.

If not, ignore this, I'm not an expert.you may not be an expert but i would like to second this theory...if you didnt mark the distributor that would be first thing to check imo. Get a piece of fuel line and a whistle that fits inside. Push the fuel line down into the #1 cylinder so when you crank it over with a jumper wire the whistle will sound when you hit tdc.

my jumper wire is at my farm:( an hour away im going to try hitting tdc before removing my dis again right now though its cold enough were i touch metal and my hand starts to freeze brr its cold if icant do it in the cold I might ask sls if I can tow my car there and use there shop????? with my tools and of corse all risks and things that happen tome " such as hurting myself" sls will not be held responseable

Is your timing too far advanced? I think you said that it was a fresh engine? If so then this next bit will not apply. If you have an old stretched timing chain it could have skipped a cog and be off by quite a lot... Do you have a timing chain that has more than one keyway? did you put it together right?

yeah it got put together right i have a 2key high profomance timing chain out on right the problem im having is getting it running from changing my intake gaskets. I drove it right before i toke the intake off so i know it works i think im off 180o its just to dam cold all i need the shop for is warmth to work on the pos the engine was put in late 2000 rebilt in 2004 over haul new cam heads oil pump fuel pump carb and intake did that worked fine
