yeah thats pretty stupid, good idea on their part but horrible for the general publics perception of the FPD now

    doubt it...

I'd find it hard to believe that anyone but die-hard ozzy fans and those who just insist on hating law enforcement would see a problem with this.

I just watched the segment and I didn't see anything about the FPD or Laney. Did you guys watch something else? I was paying attention and saw that one of the flyers they showed was from the Venue, but if I wasn't tipped off that this was about something local I never would have known it.

It would be interesting to see what the warrants were for...

I wonder how many people that were invited were people who forgot to show up for their speeding ticket or hadn't paid their parking ticket in a year or some other minor violation. Rather than sending an officer to their house, they decided to try get them all in one place.

If the people caught were people that had worthwhile warrants I'd say it's one thing, if it was a bunch of "oops forgot my parking ticket" people I'd say what a waste of time.

                    http://www.americandaily.com/article/20815

"And this brings me to a question. First consider this quote from Sheriff Laney:
"Why did we do this? The criminals are creative, so we had to get creative too...'' "They give us fake addresses, fake phone numbers, sometimes their families cover for them, sometimes their employees cover for them." (ABC News)

But Sheriff, if you knew where to send the invitations, why did you need to engage in the misuse of someone’s name to pick these losers up? Could you not have simply gone after them instead of descending into such chicanery? I could perhaps understand his actions had he been pursuing a dangerous and violent felon - and chances are Ozzy would have applauded his actions. But no, these fugitives were dead beat dads, people who didn’t show for court on minor offenses, and other such losers, who while in violation of the law presented no danger to society."

"We The People have every right to hold law enforcement to at least the same standard of conduct expected of the rest of us. To unnecessarily engage in such a deception, and to steal the name of a public figure is simply unacceptable. Shame on you Sheriff Laney, for failing to meet the standards of the uniform and badge the people of Cass County allow you to wear. "

So these individuals are spread out over 40,000 square miles (they said they had people driving over 200 miles). So say you send an officer to hunt for this individual. Granted the officer knows where they are 'supposed' to be staying but that doesn't mean they are staying there, that they're home, or that whomever answers the door won't cover for them. So then the officer has to try to find a place of work and try that, maybe come back another day to that house which may turn into weeks of return visits just to get the runaround.

                        BUT...

Send a letter with 'free stuff' with some value and you can be damn sure that letter will follow it's chain of hands to the right person. So instead of spending what could be weeks knocking on doors (which I'm sure would come back here as 'god damn pigs knocked on my door cause I didn't pay a ticket instead of catching real criminals'), they sent out a few letters and spent a couple hours with a few officers at Playmakers and took care of nearly 40 of those outstanding warrants.

I think the fact of the matter really is that not only did the FPD LIE to the people, that even though they were in trouble, they still have to serve and protect and i wouldnt want somebody that lies to the people be serving me . And you can pick up extra charges for giving false info to a cop so why shouldnt it be the same in this case with the FPD.

So undercover officers shouldn't be cops since they often lie about who they are and what they do to catch drug dealers, etc?

It's not like they lied and posted a 55mph speed limit sign and then said "well, we put that up to catch people....the real speed limit is 45 mph."

And as for the false info....they clearly identified who they were to the individuals when they came in.

With undercovers the people that they are associated with have to be involved in an illegal endeavor. The cops told them to come here free show/party which is not true. Now if there was an show there that would have been completely true which is not the case. The men that showed up were only coming to a show that they got free passes to go to. That imo is entrapment.

Look up the definition of entrapment...it would be entrapment if the police told a bunch of minors to come to a party and drink booze. It would be entrapment if the police told a bunch of people to go somewhere and murder people...entrapment is asking, forcing, or giving someone the "go ahead" to commit a crime and then charging them for that crime. There was no entrapment here.

sry ive been on HMT a lot lately 🙂

Also, Jim...this will be the first time I disagree with you on an issue when it comes to cops...the cops did what they had to do to catch criminals who had broken the law, and in some cases these things were quite severe. In the article that you apparently agree with the person that states nobody feels safer with these people caught...WE may not feel safer, but I bet that single moms that are having a hard time getting by appreciate them catching fathers that refuse to pay child support...

This has been the first time ever that I have thought that the FPD did do something good in the public interest...I have to say they did good here.
