Tire carrier for my jeep
-
Alright, here is the tire carier for my jeep that i have been working on for quite a while now. Finally decided to get it done. Its a fold down style, i use it as a step to get to the roof. I should have pulled it in towards the window more but that means i can just store something behind there. Im adding gas can holders to both sides between the tails and license plate. I know, i just have the doughnut spare on there til my new wheels and tires come in.

I will post some of it down later tonight.

its high to clear room for 2 gas cans im between tails an license plate, and to clear the license plate once i put my 32s or 35s on it. I did not do a swing out because it would block part of the tail light, or i would have to remove one of my new reverse lights(in order to clear the hatch). I also did this as i am welding expanded steel mesh to the back of the top half making it a small work/welding table for on the trail and such. Yes it takes work to get the thing up, but it isnt that bad. It is not much different than putting the tire back into the trucnk, or, as some people, onto the roof. Also the hinges are fairly snug so it does hold itself up when im stopped without putting the lock pins in.
The biggest decission maker for me over the swing out was light coverage. As being in EVAC i kinda need all my lights to be as visable as possible. Also it works as a nifty step to get to the roof easily!!
This is just one of a few designs i am working on. I have a design/jig/blueprints for a whole line of cherokee products coming from colorado (purchased the cherokee side of Rock Lizard Fabrications). Which includes a swing out design. But i am working on a design that lifts up with the hatch, hinges at the roof and is ridged at the bottom of the hatch. I just need to find struts that can hold up a tire, hatch, carrier, and possibly a gas can.

well I'll play devil's advocate...
I forsee you cursing a fold down before too long. Putting a 35" tire on there especially after you weld more steel on there... that's going to be heavy. Cover it in mud/slush/snow and have to lift that back into place every time you want in the hatch...
Covering the license plate... You could've easily mounted that to the bumper instead - or even build a bracket on the mount. Besides, now you're covering your 3rd brake light which is going to probably be just as illegal.
Regarding your rear aftermarket lights. French them into the bumper and it'd look much cleaner. Or, again, mount them to the rack. Your OEM tail lights wouldn't be covered any more by a swinger than they are with the lights you have on the bumper.

Im talken about how a large % of them have 1 or more light bars, stickers, ....... I can see some need for some of them(like one flashing light to put on the top of your vehicle when you respond to something). But Its not like they give you the legal ability to do anything)

wrong. we get legal power to use the light bars and respond ie running emergent to certain situations(accidents, fires, traffic help). We also have police radios(not scanners, full radios). And we get the sweet Cass County Emergency ID badge, haha, but yes, we are able to run emergent when needed. No we cant give out trffice violations but that isnt what we are for anyways. We are to assist in Search and Rescue, Traffic accidents, traffic control, Skywarn, and fires. And trust me, they way people drive around here, and cant notice you blocking an intersection or something, its really nice to have the lights so people can actually see you. Also we are all first responders.

I think he may have been reffering to having a large tire hanging on the back of your vehicle that will block a large amount of your view out your rear window.Ever seen riced out Civics with a huge H in the back window? Or riced out 2gs with a giant Mitsu symbol covering the back window?

no offence but you just made the most elaborate tire carrier ever.... simpicity would be were i would look if you entend to design something worth while. also why in the hell is your truck lifted with tiny ass wheels? what does that do? make it more prone to tip over?
