My free exhaust.
-
So, when I bought my EF it didn't have an exhaust setup really, just a resonator attached to the downtube and a short pipe after that, loud as fuck. That shit had to go.
I'm all about cheap with this car so I hit up ebay and found a really nice looking catback exhaust that was described as being for an 88-91 hatch specifically. It's a 2.25in with a resonator and a pretty big muffler, sits just like the stock one, with the muffler sideways. Sweet, right? So I ordered the catback and a resonator to go where the cat would have gone, cost me a total of maybe $150.
I get it from ups and the first thing I see is 88-91 CRX on the end of the box, and I'm all OHH SNAP. I don't panic tho and mock that shit up under the car, realizing already that a CRX exhaust is at the very least going to be too short.
Well, it was too short (duh). Around 6 inches too short overall. That wasn't the end of it though. The whole fitment was fucked up the way the stock hangers positioned it. The portion that goes over the rear suspension components was too far rearward, causing it to rub, and the muffler and tip were too far back, leaving the tip sticking out comically from the back. Everything also sat way the hell too low, it would be dragging on the ground at my ride height.
So I wrote the company who I bought the exhaust from, explaining that the exhaust I got was for a CRX and the auction clearly stated that it was for a EF hatch, and I explained all of the fitment issues.
Surprisingly enough, they didn't try and backpedal or say anything like I should have known it would require custom fitment or other such bullshit. They explained that they couldn't test fit all of their products and the distributor stated that the exhaust would fit my car, and basically asked me what I would like them to do about it.
I wrote back and told them that I didn't want to go to the hassle of trying to send it back (not to mention it was now dirty and probably scratched from the mock up fit), so I wanted to have it modified at a local shop and I would tell them how much it cost.
I got the work done at exhaust pros. It required two different sections welded in at different points to correct the length and fitment issues, plus all of the hangers moved a bit. Came out to $127 all said and done. It fits fine now, but its still too low and hits coming out of parking lots and on snow piles sometimes, not much to be done short of refabing the pipe from the muffler to the tip.
Anyhow, I told them about all the work and they just asked me to send them a copy of the receipt, which I did. Not only did they pay for the work at exhaust pros, they also refunded the entire paypal payment for the exhaust (minus the resonator)!
They said they were sorry for the headache and that they would not be selling that exhaust for the EF civic anymore, only for the CRX.
Now thats some damn service amirite?
So anyway, it hangs too low, and sounds like a typical honda exhaust (nest of very angry hornets) with throttle, though its pretty quiet at idle and cruising, but it was free.
Oh yeah, it looks fucking rediculous too. Looks like my civic is about to lay a large shiney oval egg.
Further info: the company that I bought this from is hiprospeed.com
this is the exhaust, I notice its no longer advertised as being for a civic, also its out of stock
http://stores.channeladvisor.com/hiprospeed-performance-auto-parts-accessories/Items/cb-fc-22?sck=45373373I also ended up buying the 4-2-1 header from them too, nice piece of kit.
Victory is mine.

As soon as I got the right manifold (civic si instead of crx hf) and associated hardware it was on like donkey kong. It runs like a damn top now except for a high idle which I blame on the artic cold, and what sounds like a stuck lifter or something. When it gets a bit warmer I'm going to redo my wiring as some of the runs ended up a bit long and i'd like to integrate everything into the stock loom or reloom everything. Hell, if I get energetic I might go with a wire tuck.
As far as everything else, the suspension needs to be changed, the front end needs to be painted, the door panels will need to be steam cleaned, and it's still got 4 different wheels on it, but all that stuff will wait till it warms up.
Hopefully I'll get some pics up this afternoon. You can stop by and have a look and a ride if you want anytime, just shoot me a PM.
