qwest services
-
this month, my house has cable and dsl+directv service. i'm curious if anyone can give me some feedback about the experiences they've had with qwest. i'm dropping cableone just like they drop my torrent bandwidth with their traffic-shaping.
so far, the only complaint i have about the tv service is the lack of the weatherscan channel. dsl service will be available monday and i'll post something about that within a week.
-
why do you say that dsl is bad? i searched the net and the consensus is that qwest upholds the concept of net neutrality, which means that torrents will not be throttled.
you don't seem to understand what it means to get choked. i'm paying for 3mbs and i'm not getting it. i was downloading the image of gentoo2008beta at 200-300KB/s for about 3 hours, and then it fell sharply around 4:30pm to 60ish. every night, i can see a steady upload of 9-11KB/s and between the hours of 12am and 4pm, iirc, it's closer to 20. using the speed thing is utorrent, i can see a solid line that tells me something is happening behind the scenes.
midcontinent is already in this area, they tore up my yard last week (i think it was them, the person at the head of the appropriate dept is on vacation and hasn't returned my call).

Have you thought about wireless cards from Verizon, Sprint, or Altell?HAHA 5gb of transfer per month? Yeah....
Alltel has unlimited transfer now, but Alltel -> Verizon so here come the caps.
Not to mention 1.5mbps is slow as shit, with real world throughput of like 768k or so

Eww. Torrenting on wireless.
As far as you not getting what you are paying for from cableone.. Call and bitch. I wasn't getting my 4mbps for about 5 months and then got pissed off, called them, chewed them out. they fixed it and it's been pretty stable since.
Don't tell them your torrenting tho.. or they will tell you to fuck off.

Qwest DSL really depends on how fast of a connection you can get (depending on how far away from the central hub you are).
You should really look into using Newsgroups... Torrents are such a waste, also have you tried encrypting your Torrent traffic?
Newsgroups + SSL = Maxed out connection all the time
If I remember correctly, Cableone has some crazy limit on how much you can download during the day or something.... If this is still the case, then Qwest DSL, if its 3mbps or faster... sounds like a really good choice.

Or just get the SOHO Cable One package. I've got 8 mbit down and 1.5 mbit up with zero throttling of upload or download.
-
i've been on the 898kU / 1.5m down qwest dsl package since moving here. I guess they have a 7M down setup now that is like $10/mo more. I have no problem saturating the connection up and down 24/7 with uTorrent behind an Ebay 678. The Actiontec 1524 that Qwest was selling is absolute shit, but the GT701 they bundle now is apparently better. If nothing else you can re-flash it to run OpenWRT.
The SOHO advice is also a good suggestion. The reality is, nobody providing home internet service gives a shit about your speed, uptime, reliability -- whatever. Anecdotally, Cable based internet is faster but you have to put up with more bullshit (inbound port filtering, traffic shaping, draconian TOS), which you appear to have run into.
-
i don't know about the soho line... my budget can't currently support that much for just my internet connection.
it seems that most of you here also have the idea that "torrents == illegal"
what you don't seem to understand is that this is the most efficient means of file distribution... right now. non-profits that can't afford excessive bandwidth use this to propagate their material (think linux distributions). i'm a big supporter of the free-oss movement and try to seed my preferred linux distros until the next release. -
good job?
Having run multiple ISPs whether your torrent traffic is legit or not it is still one of the single biggest bandwidth hogs and sources of complaints from the government, media outlets, etc.
There is no way to differentiate your traffic from anyone else's so it ALL gets rate limited.

The 7mb is really hard to actually get, I've tried it and only was able to connect at like 3mbps or so most of the time due to line quality / distance from the central office...
That actiontec wifi router / modem combo is shit I agree lol, but if they offer an option that supports DD-WRT... that's a whole another game.
Comcast down here is nice, except they have an unsaid 250gb per month rule...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_shaping
bottom line: when i buy Xmbps, i'd better get that 24/7, no matter what i'm doing with it. what? you're going to sell me a stereo that only goes up to 7 out of 10? i want my money back. same concept. can't deliver 3mbps all the time? DON'T OFFER IT! if i lose bandwidth at peak usage hours... i'm getting the shaft. in essence, by purchasing a 3mbps connection, i'm purchasing the ability to download 31+ GB/day; when i'm hampered and can't get that much (when i'm trying), then i'm losing something that i can never get back. i'm paying for a little less than a terabyte per month, and every month that i don't receive it because the network fails, shouldn't i be getting a refund? when i order a pound of meat at the deli counter and i see only 15ounces is weighed, but i'm charged for 16, you bet i'm going to complain. why should IT be any different?

I'd stop hosting linux torrents and I'd imagine all of your issues would go away.

Actually, what you're referring to is a CIR (Committed Information Rate) and is not a feature of any residential internet connectivity. There is nothing in writing or elsewhere that obligates the cable co, qwest, or anyone else to provide you with any guarantee or standard of service whatsoever.
Presumably, there are a variety of service providers in town who'd be happy to sell you a business class connection with a CIR. You probably won't be happy to pay what they're asking, however.
Alternatively, you could start your own ISP and figure out how to not oversell subscriber bandwidth (which you charge a flat fee for, irrespective of use) even though your upstream provider(s) charge you based on your actual use.
The rest of the cableOne/qwest/whoever subscribers should be livid that they are subsidizing your internet habits.

i use to work for qwest dsl technical support.. as far as the dsl goes, i wouldnt say it is great but its decent.. i didnt exacly like the way the customers were treated when they call in and need help with their bill. its been a few years since i worked for the company but maybe i can hope for the best and wish things have changed.. i would like to know how ur experience goes with them.

These bandwidth limits are fucking ridiculous. I dropped cable TV a while ago because I didn't want to pay that kind of money for something I hardly used - in the process I started watching TV online a lot. Needless to say for a while I was hitting my bandwidth limits every day (here's to watching LOST in HD from ABC.com).
Might force me to get the Residential Pro package - don't give a shit about the increased speed - I just need the bandwidth. I can about imagine how bad it'll be if I start downloading from netflix assuming I get my HTPC built this winter...
And Nick, Cable One list limits for ALL of their listed packages. I thought about going to the SOHO package eventually (I'd like to set up my own server for shits and giggles) but the SOHO package has an upload limit of like 870MB.
