Previous cars in signature = street credit???

Off the wall subject, but I notice on nearly every forum that people have a list of their cars....new makes sense, but previous cars as well... Why? Does that show your experience in cars? Ones diversity? How cool you were or weren't? It doesn't bother me, but I would like to understand.
