ok well i was thinking about painting my valve cover here soon but didnt know how to go about preping it... cause it has the wrinkle finish on it but i dont know if its powdercoated... i was gonna have someone sand blast it but they told me it would just eat into the aluminum and it would bounce off if it was powdercoated.... have anyone of you delt with this type of stuff..... sorry i sound like a noob but i just deal with the basic painting of cars never done a cover like this... thanks

Powdercoat can be sandblasted, but will probably chew up the aluminum, try aircraft paint stripper. It will remove both powdercoat and paint.

just use a powerfull paint remover like the jelly kind you paint on with a brush to remove the powder coat. Then clean it and prep like normal.

don't sand blast unless your willing to have it cleaned professionaly, as the blast media can get trapped in the baffels and reak havok on the valvetrain if not fully cleaned out.

I would recomend powdercoating over painting, but i just prefer the durability that powdercoating prevides.

Beaner...Do not blast it remember i had mine blasted and it took a couple hours and a box of 180grit to prep it for paint. Stop into Vogel get some paint remover and take it to powdercoat professionals and get it coated if you want it powdercoated. They do an insane job, you have seen my under braces. They also have endless colors to chose from.

They have done all my stuff and Tony's S2K and everything has turned out flawless for us, don't know about others results but no complaint from us. Neil's does good work as well though too, from what I have seen.

Next time you see them ask them about the great job they did on my corvette frame which cost me 300 in powdercoat (I supplied) which was a candy over burgundy that they swore up and down would be no problem at all. It was the blotchiest joke I have ever seen in my life, they were embarrassed to even show it to me, then said they could fix it.... After 4 layers of powder it was brown and I had to have it all sandblasted which took 8 hours and re-coated by Neils. I should have sued. Midwest will do black, silver and any color going down the production line for racers for a minimal charge. They did all the silver tin work in my corvette and it was flawless. Midwest likes beer.

Screw neils, they are a bunch of alcoholic hippies with no work ethic.

I couldn't care less if they are crackheads and I dont know any of them personally. I have done business with them several times and they have done quality work at a good price and delivered on time. Thats all I care about.

You got lucky! When I worked there powdercoat had rework every day! I was a painter.

Maybe they both have new crews now. None the less, I still will take everything I can to Carl at Midwest then to Neils. Powdercoat Pros cost me money and time. I wont do business with them again.

I worked for neils about a month ago. They might of got a new crew now, because if they kept to their word about firing people everyone that worked there should be fired by now! I dont know how many times a week someone called in sick because they were hungover! They lost their John Deere powder coat job because they sucked so much!

Midwest has always done a lot of John Deere. Neils must have had the overflow. It was 2 years ago that Pros screwed my chassis up.

glass beads FTW!!!! I have blasted tons of valve covers over the years. Never had any problems with damage.

I had midwest powder coat my intake this summer. It cost less then the spray paint would have cost me.

                                        PM me for:
                                        Sandblasting(I use glass beads)
                                        Diesel repairs or performance products.

I can vouch for Midwest as well, and I'm pretty sure I've done business with Neils as well. Never any issues, I was just more impressed with Midwest overall. And yeah, they do it stupid dirty cheap IMO. It was a quick turn around as well.

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!
