high octane gas

In all honesty, get the lowest octane gas that doesn't knock/ping. Anything above that is a waste of money.

Also have to take into effect how the motor is tuned. My car rolled off the factory floor ready to run 87 octane fuel, however after hitting the dyno and bumping the timing I'm running 91 at the least in it, 92 or 93 for racing. I will occasionally see detonation running 89 and much more-so with 87 depending on the weather conditions.

I know that in my car the manual recomends at least 91 octane gas. May as well spend the extra dollar every 10 gallons compared to the 89 octane. It isn't that much more expensive. I'd rather spend an extra $1.50 on gas every time than risk doing something to my engine, even though nothing major would probably happen it gives me a little piece of mind.

You'll actually make more power with lower octane fuel (it burns faster) on a stock car that left the factory (most applications). Most guys with race cars have to burn higher octane because of other reasons contributing to increased cylinder pressure. Things like increased timing and high compression need the band-aid of race fuel to keep detonation away. Why do people do this then? Obviously, you'll make more power by raising the compression to 13:1 and running race gas rather than just running 9:1 and pump gas. Premium fuel does have other benefits rather than just octane as well. There are many additives and cleaning detergents in premium fuels, so some people run it just for those reasons. My $.02, if your car is stock or near stock, run 87-89 and sace your extra $$ for speed parts.
