Windows 98

XP and Win2k are 100x more stable then Win98. 98 is still built on top of DOS...which was never made to handle multi-tasking. The NT based OSs are much better.
If you do go for XP try and get professional, its alot more secure then home.

XP is way too much for my 533 with 256MB of ram. Even on my parents computer and several others it isn't that fast. I agree that I would be willing to go with win2kPro if someone can hookmeup there. I pretty much only use my computer for games and email. And personally I never had a problem with viruses or pop-ups with 98 even after 5 years. And all I ever see with XP is pop-ups, spam and viruses. I just want my own computer back. If someone can hook me up with Win2kPro or 98SE today, i'll drive today.
Thanks,

I have Win2kPRO A LEGIT Copy. With all SP's on seperate CD's as well. PM Me if you want it. I also have Linux with multiple kernels, Fedora, Redhat, Slackware also BEOS Win XP home/pro Office 2003, Office XP and alot of other software which is all legit....my unlegit software...well that's a totally different story. Just ask Rob

Plus if ya want, I can load up the OS for ya and if your hard drive isnt completely f***ed I can perhaps use Ghost to remove any data you need. I have a server setup at home that makes it quite simple.
I don't spend much money on my car anymore....well use to....just on my little network farm of computers :)...but that's cuz these things make money instead of spend money lol.

All I need is a good windows disc. I've already formatted the drives, just need a disc. Win2kPro would be good. I'm not really up to XP. Let me know if it would be kosher to come and grab it from ya. Also, let me know if you want anything for it.
Thanks

actually XP should do fine on 256mb and a 533 cpu. Depends on the amount of cache on the CPU itself. What kind of processsor and I can tell you the amount of L2 cache on it which is the memory found on the core of the cpu itself. Windows XP doesnt use an app based utility it uses a service script based utility for a lot of things, thus making it more memory intensive. Most people get hung up on the amount of RAM, which is important, but any well designed CPU core with non inclusive cache can take XP on fine with 256mb of secondary RAM. If you want I can load up XP for ya, see if it works, not happy reghost it with Win2k (both are NTFS Based so partition won't be a problem) and as for what I want for it. Shoot me an offer, it does me no good to have all these ISO's sitting around. I have the manuals/documents/cd keys for them all too, one of the perks I get for the Microsoft account here at SEI-IT is wholesale pricing. Nothing beats being able to buy Office XP Pro W/Access/Frontpage for $10 and be a legit copy.

Win2k Pro for a slower machine....That coincides with my statement of XP>2kpro in certain aspects, 2kpro still used an applet based table. Inefficient swap file (however easily modded), and numerous other little "tweaks". Still 2kpro was one of the best operating systems ever. All XP really is 2kpro with some added networking protocols, preloaded firmware/drivers, updated GUI with a few more colors, DirectX 7.0 preinstalled, and little "quirks" worked out with memory allocation/integer based performance. But not a whole lot.
If you want a hard core solid operating system, use what I got at home. Good ol' Fedora, your machine will run beautiful on it. Let me grab a big book for you before you dive in that and try to setup KDE which is actually called GNOME in Fedora specific (KDE/GNOME=Kind of the GUI based format of Windows for Linux based OS's) and have fun using RPMs for everything
(won't even get into that) -
directX 7.0 can be found anywhere nowadays

No, Windows98SE (the OS he is inquiring on) didnt even have DirectX period on the OS. Made for one hella time also to make 2kdrivers for any OpenGL based driver as well. But with support the way it is its not a problem. The latest preloaded DirectX was in Win2kpro with Dx7.0A
It didnt support D3DX Dynamic library files whatsoever on any OpenGL based program until Dx8.0 which is why many Video Cards were not compatible with recent games upon release of Dx8.0 from Dx7.0, that is why Dx9.0A was so rushed. The most recent version of Dx is 9.0B which can be downloaded off the website or pay S/H from microsoft direct ($5).
Understand though the basic of DX itself is cross compatible to Win98 itself, so you can load Dx9.0b on Win98 if you want. Just won't see any improvement in FPS whatsoever guarenteed (though its difficult to see any improvement in FPS with Dx alone)

(won't even get into that)Oh my god are you fucking serious?
KDE is not GNOME and GNOME is not KDE. THEY ARE TWO SEPERATE WINDOW MANAGERS. Fedora is basically redhat 10, nothing too spectacular.
And RPMs? Have fun? That's like saying "hope you can figure out those self extracting zip files in windows!!"

KDE and Gnome are both windows desktop emulators Gnome is for Fedora which is a spinoff of Redhat Redhat uses KDE. Last time I checked both do the same thing with minor differences in them. RPM's I didnt feel was nessecary to explain, on the details of ripping tarr files as he is using Windows. Just kinda educating on the cores of kernels and Linux.
Fact stands that Linux is the most stable OS, and is growing in superiority and more people should be exposed to it. Especially for web server hosting, nothing and I mean nothing beats Apache, I will never use IIS (especially 5-6) for any professional client whatsoever.
I tell ya what GSR, when did I say they were the exact same? I stated both were different, that acted as the same protocol for a kernel did I not. Believe so.

My desktop machine here at work is RH 9 and I am using Gnome. It was factory installed. Both Gnome and KDE are freely available and are not platform specific.
RPM's and tar files are not the same.
I try to avoid using linux on production systems, as I have found there to be too many problems with it for my liking. Please rattle off a list of your professional webhosting clients as well... I am curious.

Ok.....got a Win98SE from a buddy locally. Loading it right now. As for all the capabilities that i'm missing out on by not going bigger......whoopty doo. Counter-Strike, and my other games, check email and browse web sites. Maybe download music and videos. That's it. 98 is fine for me. And being less stable than the others.....I never had problems.
Thanks anyways guys.....next time i'm on, I'll have my pics and videos back-up.

Edit's were done previous for grammatical reasons. Didn't spell a few thing's right. Kind of a "stickler" for grammatical errors; school does that to you. Anyways AS STATED EARLIER, BOTH ARE GUI'S - From the original statement that is what I pointed. Never did I say anything different? So your proving nothing here. Might as well quit while your ahead.
Back to work for me. Have a couple clients waiting on quotes with MS Speech Server SDK tools, Wizard just give me a PM with your contact detail and we can arrange something.

Just bought an X800T video card too....$400 video card....but man what awesome Frames per second I get out of this.
