So i left the computer in our living room on and went upstairs to watch some tv and came back down to see that it was "off". Non of the fans were blowing but the green light next to the power button was on, but it wasnt actually on. So i shut everything down, flipped the surge protector off and on and booted it back up...nothing...turned everything off and let it sit for like 20 minutes, came back and it turned on for about 30 seconds, then shut off. Took out a 10" fan and blew it on high into the case, blew all the dust out of the power supply, heatsinks, etc. and turned it on, it stayed on for about 3-5 minutes then shut off. I'm thinking either overheating or a dead/dieing power supply...any suggestions as to what might be causing it to not want to stay on? This 350mhz 32ram computer im on now can barely even handle AIM and im about ready to kill someone.

check your board, heatsink fan and your power supply

it could be your processor fan and its automatically shutting it off once the processor hits a certain temp...how old is it? what kind of chip? what brand of board or brand of computer? if it was your board more than likely it wouldnt do much but freeze

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

The computer as a whole is probably 5 years old, but all the original parts have been replaced so the oldest part in it now is probably.....2-3 yearsold? Its got an AMD XP 2600+ processor, ASUS A7n8x-x motherboard, "stock" heatsink and fan on the CPU.

definitely either a heat or power issue. can you swap a new power supply into it? if that works, check your heat sink/fan. it could just be that the fan is dying. without one, a processor will overheat within a couple seconds, especially an athlon.

well that board should detect the fan...go into the bios when it starts and check the temp of the processor and the fan rpm...let me know what it says when/if it locks up or shuts down...

Well usually when it shuts down it doesn't say anything. I think that Jeremy's comp is doing the same thing that mine is.

I was going to check the bios temps but it wont even turn over now.....press the power button and alls that happens (that i can see) is the CPU fan spins about .5 inches then gets pulled back to the original sitting place, no matter how long i let it sit or how high i have the 10" fan blowing in there thats all it'll do now. Someone wanna borrow me a 3-400watt power supply for a little bit? 😄

no the green light wont even come on now, only lights that are on are the green one on the mobo between the PCI slots and the ethernet activity light, other than that, nothing. The fans will BARELY spin when i hit the power button but thats it, no power, no juice, no nothing.

Also if i bought a power supply it'd be at least 350watts again lol, 250 isnt powerful enough for it. I just need one that i can throw in really quick to see if it is the power supply thats at fault, or if not, that its the processor.

the activity light on your nic lights up? is it the 'connected' light or the actual activity light?

it was just the "connected" light i shoulda said

Anyways...problem fixed, it was the power supply. Stupid POS brand 400watt one blew out on me i guess, so the old 200 watt one is in there temporarily until we get a decent higher wattage one. My dad failed to mention to me yesterday that he had the old one in his office so i got that today and put it in and it works fine. Checked the temps, the case was at 66 and the CPU was at 98-102 (farenheit). Thanks for the help
