Why 4 Inches?
After all, turtles of all sizes can carry Salmonella. 4 inches was chosen with the thought that most young children wouldn't try to put a turtle larger than this in their mouth (of course, putting a turtle in your mouth isn't the only way to be infected with Salmonella). However, restricting turtle sales to those greater than 4 inches probably also helps reduce the incidence of Salmonellosis by reducing turtle sales, since hatchlings are much more irresistible than larger turtles. Also, kids are probably less inclined to play with the larger turtles in the first place. Certainly, the risks of Salmonella are still present with larger turtles, and with any turtle precautions are necessary to prevent Salmonella infections (see "Reptiles and Salmonella" for more information).

Warnings:
Turtles can carry the salmonella bacteria. If the turtle's owner will be a child, be sure he's old enough and responsible enough to wash his hands thoroughly and consistently every time he handles his pet. For the same reason, turtles aren't good pets for people with compromised immune systems.

Thanks for the heads up Jim. I've kept turtles before, just never snappers.

I can look for another, they aren't too hard to take care of, u just need to feed them and clean their tank once a week. It will outgrow a 10 gallon in about a year and a half.

The snapping turtle has one of the strongest bites in the world. Your average large attack/fighting dog has around 300 lbs of pressure per bite, a snapping turtle has just over 1000 lbs. Other animal are a lion(600 pounds of pressure per bite), hyena(500), shark(forget), The only thing stronger was a crocodile..that had 2500.

Sharks have like the same pressure as a human I think it is around 300 or so.

I have kept a lot of lizards, turtles, frogs, and fish before. I am a pretty good care keeper of animals, so he shouldn't die, at least not by my fault.

yeah ive had a few turtles, frogs, and snakes...a couple of the frogs for a few years and i had one of my turtles for a little over a year and then let it go

i had a baby turtle once... but it died. it wouldnt eat anything and then its eyes popped out of his head.
