Fighting Sioux

I guess the movement behind the changing of the name is mostly being pushed by those who are not of Sioux heritage.

I don't understand how it could be offensive. Hell, I'm Irish, and I have a buddy who is Irish who is the biggest Notre Dame fan I know. He said he would go kill someone if they changed their name.

I say quite the post season if they force und to change names, they need the sioux more than und needs them. I love how Ralph engraved the logo on everthing he could just for this situation.
It will cost a pretty pennie to get rid of all of the logo's.

I think all of this talk is ridiculous. People are offended by ANYTHING, AND EVERYTHING these days. And yeah Brian is right... I don't see their name EVER changing because they will lose the arena if they do.

I heard this on the radio today.

UND is in the top 50 of ALL NCAA schools in the United States for merchandise sales.
The UND Logo was DESIGNED by a Sioux Indian.

And on a personal note:

I never played hockey, but UND hockey got me interested in watching the game. Their games are fun to go to, they put on a great show, an they are damn good. OK bye.

anyone e-mailing saying it sucks? I am not offended by the irish, but they are fighting too! Fuck that big university and their lawyer, take them all out of post season play or cover their names!

now with listening to why the name is offesive couldnt they just shorten the name to the "souix" and just leave off the "fighting" part, the word souix shouldnt be offesive to anybody i can see why the word fighting in front of it can make it seem like native americans are all violent people

As stated earlier, most of the people bitching aren't even native amaerican WTF. Why should they care if there called the fighting sioux, the only ones who's opinions matter should be the native american themselves and only the sioux at that. These people need to read up on there fuckin' history a bit, why call them the "fighting" sioux.......UM, lets see.......Because they were fuckin' warriors! DUH. The only reason this is an issue is because the person who started it all can't sit down comfortably because of the thick ass wallet in there back pocket. Your right I lived in Devils Lake just a few miles from the largest Souix res in the area and eveyone I know from out their are very proud of the name and most are fans of the sports teams cause of the name.... besides changing the name have you been in the und arena's they have the souix logo built into the building all over it would probably cost a few million to remove all the heads.... even the alerus center with the football contract with UND has souix heads in the floors of the locker rooms

on a side note, maybe the reason that some people get so worked up over the "Souix" name, is cuz it was a swear word of the Mandan indian tribe that they gave the "Souix" tribe. the name just stuck and has been used ever sense.

the logos are in the granite of the floors, and everywhere. it would be impossible to remove them, let alone cover them up, i dont see any change in the name or anything, und could not afford to lose both the ralph and the betty, which is for basketball and volleyball

I agree! I was reading the other day on the Fargo Forum website, what a bunch of BS!! There would be some liberal dumbass that would chime in and say something like, blah blah, if one Indian doesn't like it, it must be changed. Bull shit, I don't like a lot of things, but they aren't going to change it for me. I don't like how African's come over here and get huge grants for school, just because they are black. I don't get shit. Same with all other "minorities". I don't see what is disrespectful about naming a team after a group of people and having a nice image of them on everything.
