The German automaker adds a fourth sleek sports car to its lineup. legacy imagelegacy image

Porsche officially unveiled the all-new Cayman S in Frankfurt, adding a fourth sports car to its lineup. A two-seat coupe, the Cayman S fits between the Boxster S and the legendary 911.

The new sport coupe has curvaceous rear bodywork, fog lights integrated into the front air intakes, exclusively designed side air intakes, an automatically extending rear spoiler, and dual sport tailpipes. The rear hatchback slopes smoothly down to the rear spoiler, and covers a rear storage area twice the size (9.2 cu. ft.) of that found in the Boxster.

Power comes from a 3.4-liter flat six-cylinder engine teamed with the smooth 6-speed manual transmission found in the Boxster S, enhanced for the Cayman S with shortened and more precise shift travel. Output is rated at 295 horsepower with 250 lb-ft of torque, which is good enough to get to 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds with a top speed around 170 mph, according to Porsche.

Porsche Stability Management (PSM) is standard, as are 18-inch wheels. Cayman S is expected to go on sale in Europe at the end of November and in the U.S. early next year.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, president and CEO of Porsche AG, made the official announcement that a four-door sports car is in the company's future. The Panamera is what it will be called, and it will feature a front-mounted high-performance engine driving the rear wheels. The objective would be to sell 20,000 Panameras per year when it comes to market in 2009. Dr. Wiedeking also introduced the latest entries in the 911 lineup, continuing the change to the new generation 997. The all-wheel-drive Carrera 4, as well as the more powerful Carrera 4S, will go on sale this fall in both coupe and cabriolet body styles.
