Graphically challenging game for PC?
-
My friend just got a DELL comp with a nVidia GeForce 6800 GT vid card and wanted to buy a game that would take full advantage of that card's capabilities while also being a fun game.
My List:
Farcry
Doom 3Can't really think of anymore games but really don't play PC that often.

half-life 2 is pretty graphic intensive. not nearly as much as doom 3, but imo with a good system it looks a lot more pretty.
most first person shooters these days need a decent comp to run well. the real test isnt just being able to run it, but being able to run it at full detail/resolution while still maintaining a good frame rate (60fps+).

As far as I know everquest 2's graphics at the highest settings are not recommended because there isnt a graphic card that can handle them on the market... but thats just what I have heard. This is true. So far noone has produced a machine that can run this game on full settings w/ everything turned on. Actually, noone has come close to building such a machine yet.
IF he decides to play EQ2, and wants someone to help him out a bit, have him play on the Everfrost server and look me up (Iksalama is my char name)

not even close.

Wow, anyways instead of trying to perform a benchmark with a game, try a real benchmark program. Sisoft sandra, aquarmark, 3dmark, or better yet (http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa) rthdribl, since it uses a real time shadowmasking, SM3.0, active table light display and texture mapping. As for the whole EQ2 comment no computer not able to run it at high details. Your statement is half true and half wrong, computers are able to run it at complete high detail but they are not able to do it without tearing (I will not explain tearing, you can google that up yourselves)
As for worrying about the graphics card, don't worry about it - games that are coming out now and in the future dont take advantage of the 16 pipeline architecture your using in your NV40/45 core - don't even get me started on the 45+ (7800 series, 24 pipeline) game's sufferering extremely CPU intensive algorithms. Your 6800 will be fine, but go ahead and try to benchmark it and that way you can compare yourself to people with similar setups (3dmark would be the recommended program if you want to compare)

Shoulda been more clear....no computer can play it with all settings max at a level that most gamers would consider remotely acceptable.

I don't think this guy will like Everquest but I think he will like some FPS's.
