Computer problem help
-
So I was at school today playing on my laptopr, after a while I let it sit there, went to the bathroom, came back to find out that my laptop wouldn't response(cursor moved, couldn't run any programs or folders). I restarted my laptop, and it stays at the microsoft logo screen the whole time. Sometimes it would load to desktop. I found out that my MHz changes from 300 to 301 to 797. Later i found out that there is something wrong with my hard drive. My laptop sometimes would freeze sitting down(on table). To get it to unfreeze itself, i have to tilt it up(lifting the bottom of the laptop upright). This thing is whack.....Anyone know of this problem?
Compaq Presario R3000 running on AMD64 3000 with 797MHz(currently, changed from 300 on itself)1gb of RAM
I have the same laptop as Jim and Johnson..

is your fan still spinning?
-
Yes, my fan is still running. I bought it brand new from Best Buy in Fargo more than a year ago.
-
well I don't know if this is the problem, but I have heard of wires getting loose inside a labtop. that can cause funny problems, like how if you tilt it, it will work. something to look into.

I dont like my laptop at all... I've gone through 2 batteries in a year, where they won't hold a charge anymore.
What do you mean it went from 300 -> 797 mhz? none of those speeds make much sense to me...?
I would stop whacking it asap, try to recover windows first: safe mode, if you cant get in to that, pop the xp cd in, try just installing windows again, then if that doesnt work, reformat, install...
Make sure to reset your BIOS settings to complete defaults, check to make sure the harddrive is connected properly...
If you have a warranty call them, get it fixed ASAP (Compaq sucks for warranty shit), if not, you can purchase laptop harddrives cheaply online, it also could be RAM or a bunch of other shit cuasing it freeze...

This is what i meant by MHz changing. used to be 300, then jumped to 301... it does sound like something is caught within my hard drive. How do i reset my BIOS?

Did you buy the PSP on the laptop? If you didn't you will probably need an HDD replacement. It would be a perfect opportunity to get a 7200rpm drive. We threw a faster drive in my dads laptop, and it really woke the machine up.
Even though i'm asian, i'm not a computer genius, so i have no idea what are talking about..

Do you have the service plan for the laptop from best buy?The hard drive spins at 4200rpm. Thats very slow. You can replace it with a hard drive that spins at 7200rpm. That will speed up the computer, since it can get the data off the drive quicker.
no, i dont have the service plan with best buy. I swear, ill never buy a compaq again...

I will NEVER own another HP or COMPAQ. I've had nothing but bad experiences with them. My mom's HP laptop died within a year, i've had three printers that all don't work, i had an HP cd burner that never worked, man you'd think i'd learn my lesson... this is the last straw though (my laptop sucking)... Next time around, It will be a sony, toshiba or a dell...
Service plans are rip offs in the first place...
I'm guessing whats happening tin is that its speed stepping... meaning a variable CPU speed to conserve battery life.
Reset the bios, when you see the compaq screen come up hit ummm its either the delete (little delte key), insert, or one of the f keys lol i cant remember... then click on "restore to factory defaults"
Our laptops came w/ 5400rpm drives from the factory, 7200 was optional

the computer thing I can agree with, but I've always used HP printers...my wifes lasted 6 years and I have others that old that are still going (but slower and lower resolution so they got replaced)

So, i just restarted my laptop, then pushing delete and insert constantly. After loading to desktop, a message pops up saying my computer just recovered from a serious problem. Seems that everything is working fine now...fuckin compaq..

the service plan isn't really a rip off if you use it. For example, they will replace your battery as many times in 3 years as you need. Mine needs to be replaced already, as its only lasting about 2 hours instead of 3. My gateway will have to get sent out to have the hinges replaced, and the power connector replaced as well as the DVD drive.
