dsm project update...

been a long time....
Well the 97 GSX is finally close to done, actually runs today, and runs good. Sounds like a tractor since I have no downpipe gaskets installed yet, but just wanted to see if my work paid off. Me and John were grinning ear to ear when it fired to life, but not when we found the plug wire were back wards the first time and it backfired. But damn its nice to hear it after 2 1/2 months of work.
Now just the finishing touches, like finish the intercooler plumping and wiring cleanup. Still waiting on the transfer case that will show up later this week, and maybe the car will move too.

Here's some pics before I call it a night. Got almost everyhting together, waiting on a new transfer case, custom intake pipe and air filter, that will be installed later this week. Sofar everyting is together and working like it should. This car might actually see the road this summer :icon_thumright:
I have worked on the 1 and 2g's many times, but this is my first 6 bolt swap. Their are a few tifferent ways you can do the swap and we chose to stay with the 1g oil pump system. Utlizes a 1g oil cooler also.
The whole bottem end of the engine was rebuilt with performance parts, should hold up to 600hp. Balance shafts are gone, make great paper weights. Greedy timing belt, upgraded turbo, not sure how John put it, but its a modified stock style turbo. As you can see it has a huge ass intercooler, and 2 1/2in piping all around.
As it sits the car is over 90% done, just need to wrap up the odds and ends.

Hey heads up on the rubber adapters you got on the ic to pipes.. better ditch thos befor you find your self calling a friend for a ride due to blowing thos apart...
Good job !! ready for a race to see who has the fastest 2g around????

what a piece. yeh it will drive this summer, half way down the block and then it will die again lol. Atleast somebody was finally successfull in getting it running, good work!
-
in the vid it sounds like the motor has a badass knock...owell cars just LOUD without them exhuast gaskets...
thanks guys.
-
if it knocks, start it on fire and collect your money..
-
yep if this engine breaks while i'm the owner i'll just push it in a river and say it was stolen lol.
-
I hope it dosen't break again, as John will have to sell his girlfriend to pay to fix it again.
I know the engine is sound and is not knocking, but it does sound like a diesel missing the downpipe gaskets.
But it if were my car I would drive it a little and then sell it, and if it broke, blow it up and report it stolen.:p

I was just curious why it took 2.5 months to get a motor in and running? And also that car already had a 6 bolt motor in it before so all the extra work that there is, which is hardly anything, was already done. If you ask me the ONLY way to do a 6 bolt swap is the way that it was done, no need to modify the oil pump and passages or whatever the hell some people have done in the past.

shouldnt have a knock what so ever... should Not sound like a diesel what so ever... my .02

It started out with me ripping his Laser apart for the engine in the second week of janurary, got the eclipse the following weekend. It wasn't until I had the over 2 weeks after I got the engine until I got the pistons and rods so it could go to the machine shop. After the engine was done, I realized John was sent the wrong gasket kit, so another week of waiting for gaskets to show up. Finally 5 weeks after I started trhis project the engine was comming together, then I started to find parts were missing. After about a week of screwing around to find out what was missing, I told John it would be better to buy a parts car. Took about 3 weeks for him to find me that parts car, a 95 gsx. took 1 day and a half to rip it apart and start bolting the parts to the engine, I got the engine and tranny in the car about 8 days ago and have been working until now to get all the wiring and everyhting else figured out and connected. Now that its runing I am still waiting on the transfer case, he should have had a long time ago. So as you can see it takes John forever to get what is needed. My work was quick, his parts finding was another story.
Here's a list of some the parts that were missing:
transfer case
Tranny mount
engine mount that bolts to block
Power steering pump bracket
A/C bracket
Cross memeber hardware
fuel pressure regulator and hardware
alternator
handfull of sensors
rear engine plate
Shifter linkage mounts
and tons more stuffaliengotpsi wrote:
shouldnt have a knock what so ever... should Not sound like a diesel what so ever... my .02Dosen't knock, downpipe isn't fully connected to the manifold, which is making a huge exhaust leak, when we get the "diesel engine nosie" as John puts it. It actually sounds like a exhaust leak, which is right being their are no downpipe gaskets.
-
yeah i said it sounds like a knock in the VIDEO...and sounds like a deisel...being sarcastic...damn!!
but yeah it took forever to get all the parts and shit i needed...if half the parts werent missing it wouldnt have taken forever...
...and i shouldve never had to buy another transfer case....but owell ....i pretty much know where my original one is...i mean there is only like what 4 manual 97-99 gsx's in town...and everyone of them is on this website....hmmmmmmm wierd!!! -
Well it now runs pretty good. Kevin helped me figure out the plug wires were on wrong, but ya know shit happens. It actually drives now and pulls really hard. Still got a couple issues though, got a check engine light after driving it and the idle kept hunting between 1000 and 1500. So gotta read the codes and do a little more fine tuning.
