Go drive both of them, if you can. See which one you like better. Everyone is going to tell you different shit about each.

the to me the big thing is drivetrain bias. subie's are RWD biased, and like zac said, the engine is in there the right way. Evos are FWD biased, and the STI has a WAY stronger clutch and trans. the tranny is the main reason mitsu got so uptight on their warranty with the evos. It would be SOOOOOO gay to have to spend $2K+ on a trans upgrade after you just laid down $20g's on the car.

You ever try and get a Subaru tranny warranteed? SOA was declining warranty coverage on wrx's that had ANY mods, including dealer installed STi cat-backs, during 2002-2003. Dunno if this got better recently though. The STi 6 speed is a solid tranny, but I do know people (locally) who have had problems with theirs.

Ask kirk about his STi transmission being SOOOO strong....

They are both nice cars, but you guys that are saying the STi is way better, need to drive both.

but fuck it, just buy a 335i instead.

                          [edit] US-spec

                          [edit] Rev. D (2004)

In 2004, Subaru of America announced it will sell the WRX STi. Subaru Tecnica International's president said in an interview with Road & Track magazine that he wishes to best the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the US. Thus, the each iteration of the US-spec WRX STi was essentially the same as the respective J-spec STi Spec C (the highest performing STi version barring special variants). All the part numbers match up, including the part-numbers for the glass windows and dampeners. However, instead of the EJ207, the USA receives the first EJ257, a 2.5 liter version of the EJ207. Unlike the EJ207, it features hypereutectic cast pistons as opposed to the forged pistons in the EJ207. The steering rack is the standard STi's 15.2:1 instead of the Spec C's 13:1

                          [edit] Rev. E (2005)

As with the Japanese-spec C models, US-spec STis received additional rear fender flaring in order to allow an increase in wheel size. The wheel size went from 17" x 7.5" to 17" x 8". In accordance with the increased wheel width, steering lock-to-lock turns have been reduced. Wheel hub strength was improved. The P.C.D. was changed from 5 x 100 to 5 x 114.3.

                          Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Impreza_WRX_STI

wanna show me where the tranny changed? From what I can tell it is the same 6MT tranny that Subaru has used in ALL of their STi's....much like the 5MT (WRX) is the same tranny that was used in the Subaru Brat back in the 80's w/ virtually no changes. Typically speaking the 6MT is a great transmission, but Kirk has had numerous problems with his, maybe he got a bad one, I dunno...that being said, I still think that OVERALL the transmission is better in an STi, though not for drag racing, but the 4G63 is a better block for making cheap horsepower reliably...mostly due to its having been around for at least 15 years.

The winter I bought my '02 WRX I would've bought an EVO if I could've afforded it at the time. Ended up with the STi because the place I was financing my WRX through were dicks and wouldn't refinance my car at a lower interest rate. I already knew Subies and Muscatell gave me great trade in on my WRX so I just traded up. The EVO is a great car, I wish I could have both. But I love my car too, they both rock. If you want the one you can mod cheaper/easier and get more out of it go with the EVO all the way.

                                    One time...
