Valve stems do go bad. Even metal ones. I am by no means sticking up for them either. I wasn't there to witness it. I am merely stating a point. It's pretty tough for someone to fuck up a valve stem when mounting a tire because you never touch the stem in the processs. The only time a person comes in contact with a stem is if you are going to remove it. Sorry to hear about your misfortune and good luck. At least it's just a stem and not the entire wheel like in Jim's situation.

Exactly. That sucks about your wheel and all, but you really should check the "tech specs" on things before going around and neg rep other people/places. Ive been working on cars for years, dealing with tires too for years and yet have I ever "tore" the valve stem installing the tire. You should have brought NEW valve stems in with the tires and rims for them to install them. They are just a few pennies on the dollar and are a hell of a insurance deal against leaks later, which also could lead to a tire blow out. Valve stems are extremely strong, and like wes said, you usually only damage it whle removing it or old age. Goodluck on your deal.

So I did a little homework for you and just like with a set of JDM Enkeis I had, your volk wheels require a special valve stem. (thats what you get for wanting exclusivity). It is something you should replace whenever you change tires just because of this reason. You can get them here amongst a few other places.

Do you guys even know what metal valve stems are?????? The only way they do go bad is if the core fails, then you replace, rust out, or get sheared off/hit.....

Did they hold air when you brought them in, I am assuming they did, tell them to replace it.....

I do know what they are and I do know how they go bad. If you think the only way they go bad is the core failing, then youd better go ask any "otr" truck driver who has had one fail on them on the freeway. Like I said, I wasn't there to witness it. It was stated that these wheel were from the 80's right? There is NO WAY that I'll ever use a valve stem from that long ago. All valve stems go bad even metal ones and even the almighty rays/volk ones are not failure proof. Remember they are either made from aluminum or brass and can split. I have seen it before. Oh by the way, I do work at a tire store as well. Just not there.

O.K. Mr. Smarty go to a party. The most often cause of a "metal" stem failure is over tightening upon installation. Now you may ask "how could that happen". Well sonny sit right here and let me tell you a story. Nah jk. He did mention that they were a fresh restoration right? well, that would involve refinishing the wheels more than likey and you would definately need to remove the stem. They are not designed for repetitive removal and installation and tightening them over and over can compromise their strength hence making them "split" in THIS situation. And once again I will state that I wasn't there and I didn't witness this so what I am stating is speculation but I have seen them come through the door broken, split, cracked, and stripped. Not all of them were leaking from the core.

And I'm done. My fingers hurt.

Yes, they have metal, but they aren't entirely made of metal. they use metal parts to "pinch" the rubber sealing surface between the stem (metal) and wheel (metal). Kinda like washers pinching bushings for any suspension component.

Now, you ask how they go bad? Have you ever looked at a old 5-15 year old tire? rubber deteriorates over time due to age, use, and worst of all temperatures (hot to cold, hot to cold, cold to hot, etc etc).

As for them being restored, they should have been replaced. They should be replaced everytime a tire is removed. Now, ask yourself this personal question, would you reuse a condom? NO, at least I hope not. Would you use one that is 5-15 years old? NO, again, at least I hope not. Thank you very much, just like wes said, my fingers are tired and I hope you use a new rubber next time you work on your tires.

                      Ry

P.S. we weren't there ourselves, but from our experiences, rubber gets old and is cheap insurance to replace.
