Long story short, Ford should burn in hell for making a shitty 4x4 shift motor. The saga of my weekend under the Explorer will follow later. BUT, the 4x4 works now. I will pwn winter this year.

Very common problem. I sold ALOT of them when I worked at the local salvage yard.

Yeah, the motor itself is usually fine. There is a little rubber bushing that gets old, hardens and crumbles away causing the motor to get knocked out of position. Its a rather simple fix, however you need to take the motor apart. Thats where my old motor had the problem. I overhauled it, but when I went to put the cover back on I had snapped 2 of the 3 bolts off in the housing. RTV didn't hold the cover on so the damn thing wouldn't shift into 4 anymore since the position sensor didn't work because of the cover.

thats why they have problems with the "motor" and people usually just replace the whole thing. I can't count how many of those things I have replaced.
