I can honestly say that i probably spend more time in a gym every week then anybody on these boards. I've join/worked out at almost every gym in Fargo/Moorhead. I have had a membership At the YMCA for the last 2 years and I lift primarily at the West Location everyday . For your needs (price, location) including finding someone to lift/exercise with, I would choose the YMCA West.

It's never as busy as the Wellness Center, has the nicest equipment hands down, and gives you more options (free-weights/Hammerstrength/cardio/basketball/raquetball/swimming) then any other gym in town. I pay 32$ a month and it's well worth it.

Ask Bryce or listen to Ryan, nothing beats the Y.

P.S. If you join you should put me down as your Referer :icon_thumleft:

Listen to Colin, he knows what he is doing. I am going to be rejoining here really quick. I had to leave for a bit while things with work got settled down and I paid off some debt. Colin is the shit and the equipment there is unbelieveable compared to other places. Very few days is it busy and if it is it only last an hour or so.

I've heard that like 6 times this week. I'll answer that the way I always do. I'm 6'5" 295-300lbs at 22% bodyfat right now. I look large, but not abnormally so.

With my current lifestyle (eating/workout/sleep pattern): If I used steroids or HGH I would probably sit at about 370-400, and look like Master-Blaster (midget on giant retard) and have more acne on my back then Brian's ass. Oh and I'd blow out an ACL, MCL, whatever in about a week.

IE: If i used steroids I would be so big it would be rediculous.

It depends on how you shrug.

The way to make gains: Straight bar in a freesquat cage set to at least 6-8" lower than the bottom of the bar with you holding it. Add weight till you can't stand with it. minimum 8 sets of 10 - 15 reps: works primarilly you lower back and ab core, also you traps, rear delts, upper lats, hamstrings, quads, glutes and your entire forearm. One of the most important excercises among powerlifters as a jumping point for olympic style deadlifts/clean/snatch

Umm, I may not be as big as you Colin, but a lot of my life was spent in the gym and have since lost pretty much everything I worked for in high school. I know what they do, I was just stating that shrugs aren't something you get cocky about. Thats all I was saying.

I spend about 2 hours in the gym 7 days a week, and lift with Colin as often as we can make it work. I got to say that the YMCA is the best gym I have ever lifted at. They have tons of free weights, and enough 45 pound weights laying around that you can leg press 1,000 pounds (22 plates). I know at the SportCenter you would have a hard time finding that many plates.

I worked at the SportCenter, and they are #2 in my opion. I just didn't like the dirty puke buckets laying around by every leg press machine.. or cleaning them. $25 a month since I joined with a friend.

I lifted at Exhale for a full year, there dumbells only go up to 80 pounds. Well fuck that! That aint shit, the SportCenter had DB's up to 150. 24 hours but they had weak weights and too many machines. $32 a month

At the YMCA I was paying $42 but then I brought in my W4 tax information, and that knocked down my membership price too $12.90 a month!!

Hope this helps Joel, ask away if you have anymore questions

Best place I have ever lifted was the MHS baby!! Maybe it was all the high school chicks? haha. Only other place I have lifted in town is the Y downtown and the NDSU Wellness Center. The Y downtown was pretty decent and I am sure the Y west is nicer than the Y downtown, so that would be my recommendation for you, Joel.

oh I've lost nearly 60 and am the lightest I've been since junior high....

Still need to get into the gym.

None-the-less... Was going to get a membership at Snap or Anytime, but I think the Y might be a better choice. Not like I'll be going to the gym outside of hours that the Y is open. Also a plus that I don't live far from Y West and work just up the street from Y downtown.

i hit the downtown Y. Work pays for it now but i used to pay out of pocket and it was never too much.

I only do freeweights, and above about 255 i like to use chalk, which the Y has plenty of. There are gyms now that won't let you use chalk (like the crazy fitness resort in Eden Prairie or whatever) and want like $15 for a single workout. It was hard for my dad and I to find a walk-in gym in the Twin Cities area that actualy had real freeweights last time we met up there.

The Y benches have the rotating-bearing things which I really like because finding a spotter that isn't some dumb-ass frat-rat that wants to dead lift the bar off your chest is a hassle. I only grab spotters for "maybe" sets; the rotating bench setup at the Y works pretty slick for everything else.

I usually go around 8pm on weeknights, once or twice a week, and the free-weight side of the downtown Y is pretty much empty.

Where do heavy benchers go in town? I don't think I've ever seen anyone (besides me) load up 315 on a bench rack at the downtown Y. I'm also the only guy I've ever noticed using competition form.
