Vinyl Cutter? opinions...
-
Since I work 3 days a week, I have a lot of time off. I was trying to think of ways to make a couple extra mbucks while i'm at home. Buying a vinyl cutter and selling decals on ebay and possibly starting a website crossed my mind, and I found a vinyl cutter for really cheap. Good idea or not?

I did a 'feasibility' study on this a year ago and unless you've got a bunch of guaranteed clients or a guaranteed large order you won't make any money for a good time. You're going to have to have prices or new designs that make you competitive with the other thousands of people that are selling decals on ebay - which means having someone to design good quality pieces.
You're also going to need software to do the designing.
I seriously considered doing this before I did the study (it was for a class) but I talked myself out of it.

If you need any help. I have a real good friend that his mom owns "Sign Pro" on 45th off of main avenue. She is a really nice lady and I am sure I could talk to her for you if you needed anything.

Vinyl plotters are like everything else, you get what you pay for. I have a cousin who used to run a sign shop in Minot that will attest to this. Not saying buy the most expensive, but I think a decent one will still run you about $650 give/take.....now if you can find a vinyl printer/plotter combo, you might be able to rake in money faster. Just a thought.

i think its a good idea...but if you do it...make sure you get good vinyl....i had bryce make me some...and after a year....they were all cracked....just make sure you get high quality stuff....if you know people that are into racing mods, mod 4s, enduro, ect...you could make alot of money...because every year they all get new stickers.......if you have competitve prices...you could make alot of money.

I know alot of people that race street stock, and sprint cars also.

I'd rock a FargoStreet.com sticker.
These are the ones I had made for my site. And Joel, I'm needing to redesign them, and I'll be looking for someone to print them off. If you get this plotter, I'll come to you for them. I usually print off a batch of about 100 each time.

I make vinyl pretty often for my father, he is a installer. Joel if I were you I would skip a cutter and buy a vinyl printer. Then you don't have to worry about having 100 colors of vinyl. Or the mess that comes with layering colors.
Jon is right you really need to buy quaitly vinyl, and I learned that the hard way. Cheap vinyl gets hard and breaks after a while. I got some great stuff these days!
Really though it's going to very hard to make $5,000 bucks worth of vinyl inorder topay off your cutter/materials/computer programs..
