Taken from consumer reports for the last generation (98-04) of SLK's:

        1998-2004 Mercedes-Benz SLK: Reliability
        Trouble Spots
Consumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Brakes: Hard brake pedal due to insufficient vacuum booster assist. (1999-01)
Check-engine light: Recurring check-engine light maymay be caused by a problem with the mass airflow sensor. (1998-04)

Fuel pump: When refueling at a rapid rate, fuel may spit back from the filler neck as the tank approaches full. (1999)

        Consumer Guide® Estimated Repair Costs
This table lists costs of likely repairs for comparison with other vehicles. The dollar amount includes the cost of the part(s) and labor (based on $50 per hour) for the typical repair without extras or add-ons. Like the pricing information, replacement costs can vary widely depending on region. Expect charges at a new-car dealership to be slightly higher.

        Item Name Repair Cost

        A/C Compressor $770
        Alternator $490
        Automatic Transmission or Transaxle $1,245
        Brakes $610
        Constant Velocity Joints $1,435
        Exhaust System $880
        Radiator $700
        Shocks and/or Struts $1,295
        Timing Chain or Belt $415

        NHTSA Recall History
2000: A safety-improvement campaign to fix side airbags that may suddenly deploy in hot weather is offered by Mercedes-Benz.

2001-02: Owner's manual does not contain the proper headlamp-aiming instructions.

SLK's are fun cars, although there is a HUGE difference between the present and previous generation of SLK's.

In comparision to the other cars in its class for the 98-04's... I think you'd be better off with some of the other options: Rivals included the BMW Z3, Chevrolet Corvette, and Porsche Boxster.

If your looking in that range, the boxster has been basically unchanged up until this year, and you can find them for just about the same as an old SLK... Z3's are dated but still cool... and a 97+ corvette still looks modern to me...

Seriously consider the Boxster... I had a hard time choosing between the SLK and the Boxster (the new SLK)...

Kenn, just keep in mind that German cars are extremely high maintenance and expensive to repair (like everyone has said). And you know me with all the cars I work on. On another note, they are still excellent cars, just need to be prepared for upcomming expenses. Whats the final word on the RSX?

Yup....When it has problems get ready to bend over. Merc has horrible reliability.

If your gonna buy an european car, make sure it has a good warranty

How does it still have 3 years warranty? Even if it has the extended MB one, it doesnt transfer over to you beyond 36,000 miles / 3 years.

Go drive the older gen and figure out if you like it or not before you buy one.

i guess one of my points is that since he is selling it for 14,000 which is way under priced, i could resell the car again and make a profit.
