Senator Hillary Clinton Endorses 55 MPH Speed Limit
2008 Presidential contender Hillary Clinton endorses a return to the 55 MPH speed limit.

Hillary ClintonUS Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) on Tuesday endorsed a return to the 55 MPH maximum speed limit for "most" of the country during a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Senator Clinton, who is leading in the polls for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, responded to a question about whether she supported the Carter administration's national maximum speed limit.

"The 55 mile speed limit really does lower gas usage, and wherever it can be required and that people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said.

The senator admitted that the move would be too unpopular to implement nationwide. "Well, there are just some parts of the country where that's just not going to happen," she said. "You know, where you've got miles of open, flat road."

"I mean, there are things that can be done. So maybe the trade off is, you know, most of the country where 55 miles an hour doesn't seem like a burden, we have that. In the rest of the country, inflate your tires before you head off into the sunset," Clinton concluded.

A newly elected Republican majority Congress repealed the national 55 MPH speed limit in 1995 over the objection of then-President Bill Clinton after groups like the National Motorists Association demonstrated the law's shortcomings as a "life-saving measure."

Not a new article by any means (though I had not seen it before). However, how likely do you think this to be, given current political conditions? What is your reaction to this article?

55mph is gizzzay....although when i drive my truck i do go slow (usually around 65) cuz it sucks gas like a mother.....people should choose if they want to go slow to save gas.

I don't think that it'll ever happen. I don't think that there would be many people who would accept the lower speed limits especially as they are rising in various states.

Yup, I remember when Montana had no speed limit.

I would have a hard time driving 55 on the interstate. Its hard enough through FM on the interstate most people go over that imagine rural ND. It would suck.

If she gets the Democratic win i'm pretty sure every Republican in the US as well as most of the moderate Democrats will vote against her. There has to be enough people with enough common sense to not elect her into office.

putting words into my mouth now Kirk? I'd rather see McCain in office than Hilary, but depending on who she'd be running against, I may vote for her. Against Condi Rice (for example) I'll vote Hilary every time. I haven't made any preferences towards any candidates yet.

I personally think of all the potential candidates, she has the most experience running a country....8 years. And fwiw, my retirement was doing SUBSTANTIALLY better back then compared to this "booming" economy I hear about these days.

👽 I'm with Chuck... I'd much rather see McCain who can think for himself and actual stands on issues rather then the wishy washy biatch clinton. If her husband could run again... that'd be a different story.

Anyway no assurances she'll be the dem. canidate...

I don't think it would get passed through even if Hillary was in office.

People are in a hurry now days; cars are improved for safety & better gas mileage.. I'm sure a lowered speed limit will not happen, but ya never know.. Just seeing it as being unlikely.

She has a better chance of getting it passed while still in the Senate than in the Whitehouse IMO.

First 100 hours in the new left wing house/senate....don't see why she doesn't do it right now....oh wait - that 100 hours was bullcrap.

They there first 100 hours on the 4th, then the following Monday they cancel the entire day for a football game that does not start until 8:30....

                                  Perfect sense.

Your right Tjamz she would have a better chance to do it now.
