Shady Towing company in Grand Forks...
-
What do you guys think of this situation...
My sister lives up in Grand Forks and goes to UND. The other day she parked her car and had her son with her (2 years old). When she got back her car was gone...luckily it wasn't the shitty cold weather like we'd had last week. Anyways she called the PD and they told her they didn't know where the car was as they'd had no reports on it or anything and told her to call this towing company. She called the company and they said they had her vehicle. She looked at where she had parked and it was a legit parking spot, no "NO PARKING" signs or anything like that. She took a bunch of pictures and got a ride to the towing company and said she wanted her car back and that she wasn't paying because it wasn't parked in a no parking zone. The guy said "so I guess I'm not getting any money from you" or something along those lines and she said no give me my car back. After talking to some people it sounds like this company has a reputation for towing without any reasons and trying to get money from people. Think she should sue/press charges? The PD didn't authorize her to tow it, they had nothing on file for her and had no clue where her car was. Isn't that Grand Theft Auto? Scamming? And if it had been cold out when this happened she could have been forced to be outside in the frigid temps longer than necessary with her son. What do you think this situation warrants? I personally would like to go up there and beat some ass but I figure the legal route might make some sense too.

If noone gave the call or the ok do tow it, they had no reason to do so.... And that my friend, is THEFT plain and simple. But she has to make sure there was nop call made to the towing company. If they said that the police called and they didn't, then she should press charges.

She got her car back that day. The police department had NO IDEA where her car was, if they'd have authorized a tow they would have known. They told her to check with this company to see but didn't know if that's where it was.

yup, it is theft.

The city of grand forks is filing charges against towing companies right now because they have been charging ridicoulous amounts when they tow a car. She should definately press charges.

I thought that was Fargo that was doing that...I could be mistaken though.

im a pro on this subject.
even if they tow the vehicle illegally, the most they can get is a small fine from the city. Its happened to me, and they got fined $150. On the other hand, the 20 other cars they towed they make the money back on...
basically tow company's are above the law. its next to impossible for them to get into trouble and can do whatever they want...
