So, to bring this back from the dead, who gives a flying fuck what the force exerted by the moon on a satellites is? Who cares what the weight of some douche bag driving over a bump is?

        FUCK YOU PHYSICS!

For those of us going into math-oriented fields of study, these types of questions prepare you for what lies ahead of you in life. I personally don't give a shit about the moons affect on me/the earth/poop but eventually I'll probably have to use the concepts behind it.

not only is it boring but it is totally useless... what is the ponit of solving a problem like that(minus the elephant part) if you just going to exclude real world conditions such as friction, wind, temperature of materials, etc etc. nothing works in real life like it does in a laboratory setting with "known" conditions and "friction is negligable" type circumstances. college intro physics ftl.

Getcher green hat, we are goin fishin.

I don't know what college intro to physics you took but in our intro class we're not negating friction, wind resistance, or anything like that...Maybe it's the fact that i'm in intro physics for engineering students...who knows.

In ME221, 222, 223 (the statics & dynamics classes at NDSU) you almost always negate those varibles. Wind Resistance is almost NEVER used.

same here, hence my point. dumb.

Thats why I took Phys 251 rather than ME221 or whatever. We start out not using them just to get comfortable with the problems and variables, and then add factors like wind resistance, friction, etc. as time goes on.
