i would rather buy my own car so i know what im getting cause most parents dont know what young adults like or just dont agree with what we are doing to these cars these days...i guess i would be pretty pissed......my parents had bought me a truck for my first car and my dad didnt even want me to put a cd player in it...they grew out of it fast...mel maybe they dont want you to mod it when you are still making payments on in...maybe afraid that you will start missing payments..just my opinion though.

Sounds like your mom is treating this thing like a lease. I don't blame her really, and here is why:

At present, you do not own the vehicle, they do. They put the money into buying it and are doing their best to protect their investment. Regardless of what the warranty says, it is in their best interest to mandate that you leave the car stock.

Why, you ask? Well, for starters it is going to hold its value much better if it remains 100% OEM since there will be much less wear and tear on the vehicle from being modded (even slightly). For example, larger rims tend to have less shock absorption, so the suspension has to do more to compensate...but wait, you want an aftermarket suspension as well...that makes things stiffer so now the car has to absorb the shock of every bump on the road which causes other things to go wrong such as twisting of the vehicle that can cause the doors to not seal properly. This of course can lead to more dirt getting inside the car which will cause the carpets to become more grimy and require more vacuuming and shampooing, which will ultimately lead to the carpet deteriorating at a faster rate due to higher amounts of activity from the added vacuuming and shampooing.

Don't even get me started on turboing a car, especially one that did not come stock with one. Adding power almost always shortens the life expectancy of the drivetrain and there is nothing worse than having to shell out extra money for a new motor when you are still making the monthly payments on a car you don't even own yet. What happens if you say "Fuck it" and just leave the car with the blown motor and tell your parents to get bent? They incur another bill aside from what they already have invested in the car, thats what happens. Why would they want to potentially subject themselves to something like this?

Lets not forget that adding aftermarket parts generally LOWERS the value of the car. Add $5000 in aftermarket parts and watch the value drop $2500 in turn.

Tell me again why your parents are unreasonable.

I just think some parents get off on the whole "power trip" thing.... not saying i am 100% against what they have said or are wanting you to do. but i think some parents need to lighten the fuck up..... i would tell my parents to go fuck themselfs if i'm going to pay for a car i can't do anything to.... i would just bum rides and have them sell the car. but my parents have never acted so controling and uterly stupid....plus the fact i'm over 18 so as long as i don't act completly like an ass i can pretty much do what i want to....

Leave the car stock for shit sake! Do what I do buy a cheap turbocharged car and dump money into it if you want speed/. Always have a back up car if your going to mod cars. You should see my collection of turbocharged cars from $256-$22k. I drive everyone of them. Nothing wrong with 90's vintage cars.

Your parents love you Mel. You should be happy that they bought you a car.

over my past cars i have paid my dad 3000 dollars plus about 1200 for tax and shit and am now paying my mom 3000 for this car. my dad comes downstairs and says you have not given me anything. so i take it the 4200 dollars is nothing. i am going to buy a cheap hatch and not mod the car i have now. then i can do what i want with my hatch. as far as payments, they know that they dont need to worry about it, because i pay every month 400 or 500 dollars ever since i got my new job so for about 5 months.

This thread is funny... The people disagreeing with her parents are the ones who haven't sunk $20,000+ in to a car...

Anybody that has spent a shit load of money on a car, especially when they were young, will tell you, it was fun and yes it sounded like a great idea at the time, but they prob would do things a bit differently if they could do it over again (from ghettoing shit, to not buying it at all etc...).

Eitherway, paying the car off totally, before you blow it up, is prob a good idea. Sucks to pay car payments on something you can't drive (trust me), and it's usually a smart idea to have enough cash on hand to fix it when it breaks (it will).

Oh and buy a reliable beater, becuase it really sucks when your main car AND your beater are both broken, especially when you need to get somewhere.

I'm not sure what car your talking about in particular, but if it be 99 or the 00+ civic's... I'm positive they are worth more then 3k (if thats what your paying your mom). If they did indeed help you pay for it, appreciate it, and if they want it stock, understand they are doing so to help protect your car (from their understanding atleast) so that you can continue to drive, you know?

Anyway Im sure I would have been pissed, but hindsight is always 20/20 and sometime you might appreciate them making you keep it stock (and really, is it that bad to drive stock?)

i (as well as a lot of others on here) highly recommend listening to us and your parents right now from all of our experiences. it is sounding like a broken record. keep it stock, pay it off, mod it. Period. many of us have been in the "making payments on a broken car" era. and another, i dont mean to disrespect but how old are you? I take you are still in highschool and have had at least 4 cars now? Im shocked, especially since most of them have been Hondas. I dont know your past and dont want to, but presently, you are driving a highly reliable car and modding it in almost any way will make it worse. Listen to us older folks who have been around long enough to experience the shitty things that will happen. But I will also say to listen to your parents and respect their decisions and opinions until you are out on your own. I know it sucks living with them and having to live "by their rules", but they do it to protect you.

imho, if you put wheels on it that are a stock offset, and stock width, who give a flying fuck. sure you cant have suspension, which Kind of defeats the purpose of having wheels, but still, if you want wheels, they can't deny you if you follow the guidelines.

                              no race car? becuz homeowner...

i don't doubt that they are trying to do whats best for me. i only have to pay 3k on this one because of the trade in that i paid for. but what i am getting at is that i can't mod even after i pay it off. if i bought a hatch i am not going to do anything to this car i have now. i would leave it stock.
