internet connection?
-
ok prolly a stupid question but i reformatted my computer and i cant figure out how to set up an internet connection directly to the router, i mean with the wire and all. right now im just using my wireless card wich has a shity ass connection
is there any one that could walk me through it or point me in the right direction?

go into your network connections, and disable the wireless adapter and delete its connection if it will allow you to. connect your nic card directly to the router, which should be connected to the cable modem. restart your computer. if your router is using DHCP, and your nic card is working properly, windows xp should detect the new connection by itself. if that doesn't work you might have to set up the new connection manually, which shouldn't be a problem as long as the wireless connection is disabled. let me know if you need anymore help.

if the wired connection isn't showing in the list of network connections, the device may not be functioning. ensure that the wired NIC is enabled by exploring the device graph in "Device Management" (start->run->"devmgmt.msc")
if your network card has a yellow (!) next to it, you probably need a driver for it.
another way to check what's going on
start->run->"ipconfig /all"
you'll see an entry for "wireless network adaptor" with a valid ip address (something like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x). If your wired NIC is working you'll also see "Local Area Network Connection 1" or something like that. If you don't see it, there's a device problem. if you do see it, the device is being seen but not used/configured. If you see it, and it also has an IP address, but you think something is still wrong, then we'll need more informatino to be helpful.
