You insulted my schooling. Just cause you went to a certified college doesn't mean shit to me. Whoopie you got a piece of paper that say you can weld. Now no doubt you are a good welder(ive seen your work) I just don't see the point of going to a 2 year school when I can learn alot of the industry in 2 weeks and be able to hold my own. Go ahead tell me I can't weld and that im stupid and I don't know anything about welding. I know what I know and ive only been in this industry for under 3 months. But I guess ill take my 2G cert that i already have and go sulk cause im a horrible welder. I need to find a new career I guess.

If you have half a brain and hand eye cordination you can be decent @ Mig the first day using it.

Hands on experience is gonna own schooling ANYDAY!

^ +1...my grandpa had no training or schooling for welding and he could have welded circles with arc against anyone on here...but had to quit cuz he got a pacemaker now so he's not supposed to weld anymore, still does sometimes though.

                            None, we're self taught.

FYI you don't have to take a class to get cert'd since everyone keeps talking about school to get a piece of paper.

You could walk in my door tomorrow and say i took this class went to this school, i gte this certificate but its not gonna matter im gonna walk you back to the machine and tell you to lay me a bead. Schooling and papers mean nothing to me if you cant run a bead. Exactly why i did't go to college i cant concentrate reading a damn book and writing a written test but give me the work hands on and i'll do it.

Rookie Fab (as we call him here @ the shop, aka known as DrifterExtreme) has progressed 10 fold since he started here and i guarntee it isn't because he took no damn 80 or whatever hour TIG class....

Being we're on the subject...does anyone on here have a tig, and would be willing to give a crash course on how to do it and let me do some practicing...I could pay for materials or something if needed. I've always wanted to learn tig, since our school only did mig, arc, and oxy-acytelene welding in metals class.

Oxy acytelene has the same initial concept as TIG, practice up on that and get to learn a rythm of making a puddle and you'll be 10 steps ahead when you try TIG

In most cases, this piece of paper which means nothing, gets you a lot better jobs for bigger companies a lot faster than if you just walked in and said "I can weld give me a welder". Its just like any other industry/profession.

arguing with all you guys who fit the description, "school just isnt for me" about whether or not attending school is beneficial is like banging your head against a wall.

especially since everyone who says they are "self taught" has undoubtedly picked up their laptop and researched the hell out of welding, tufte and "rookie fab" included... so its sort of hard to say you had no instruction or schooling, no matter how informal, of any kind. the better the peer advice, the more time spent practicing and researching what works and doesnt and why = education. your dumb if you dont put that same effort into a slip of paper that says your not an indiot. /end of story.

Getcher green hat, we are goin fishin.

owning your own shop and putting out products to prove you are in fact talented is a slightly different situation, because he has already shown everyone he is in fact, not an idiot.

people who want to work at dmi etc benefit from that slip of paper, just as joel stated since he walked into the place making more then people without it... why? because it says something about him....

so how now, is education, or that slip of paper, worthless?

Getcher green hat, we are goin fishin.
