Sure sounds like discrimination if you ask me...I'd sue them just for not giving u that opportunity cuz your white...wow affirmative action at it's finest. Lets make a law for equal rights, and just use it to give special treatment to minorities and turn the white ppl into the oppressed group.funny thing is, they say in a couple of years, whites are going to be the minority to people of african american, latin, and asian, and arabic descent. and i guarantee when that happens(we all know it will), nothing will change, and people will still expect handouts because they USED to be the minority..... :icon_shaking:

I went to a highschool with a mandatory bussing system (kids were bussed around to different schools to meet racial quotas).
I can assure you that many of the black kids in my school didn't want to be "integrated", and that "reverse-racism" is alive and well amongst some people.
Being a white minority in that situation was occasionally unpleasant.
Multi-culturalism is a good then when done well. It's an ugly thing when it's done badly. Since government always does a bad job at everything.... well you can guess where I'm going

I do think we need to do something about the reservation issue. Many reservations are bastions of povery, drunkenness, etc.both my grandparents and my father would like to take this time to say fuck you.
seriously though, if your going to say that, then you better advocate for burning the pj's or gary indiana...:icon_rr:

Start a team called the "fighting crackers" see if I give a shit. Call me what u want, it's just a NAME, if people cant take getting called a name go back to elementary school... I think we should stop holding their hands too, they've had 100 years assistance I think they can get back on their feet by now, same with black people slavery has been over for plenty long. It's all just an excuse to leach off of people that actually go out and earn a living. My family didnt own slaves or kill any indians so I shouldn't owe them shit...get your own job and make your own money.
If it were up to me the government would stop giving handouts to people... What ever happend to natural selection, and "only the strong survive". If u can't provide shelter for yourself or cant put food on the table, tough shit. If my grandpa can go from eating lard and bread sandwiches, going to school till the 4th grade, and being dirt poor as a kid to owning several businesses and being able to carry enough cash in his wallet to buy the best caddies and chryslers money could buy back in the day, anyone can. It's just people nowdays are usually too fucking lazy to go work their asses off to get somewheres in life, cuz our society doesnt push it, they just know the govt will give them what they need to get by.
Brandon...you should really watch the movie American History X ...that may change your mind on the last 2 paragraphs...Granted you can't take that movie as the total truth, it def. opens up your mind to what can and most likely does go on in our society.

Ok...I think that the sioux tribal council doesn't speak for the entire tribe. i've met many sioux(pardon my language apparently) natives that were very much in support of the nickname/logo. One is my manager at work. One of the last cheifs of the sioux(sry, my potty mouth), gave permission to UND to use the nickname. The Tribal Council is carrying on this way to far considering the much, MUCH, BIGGER problems facing natives on their reservations such as homelessness, alcoholism, drug abuse, faulty education systems,...maybe they should worry about those problems first before making a stink about a NAME...
How can they be mad? I mean UND basically lets ANY sioux(theres that bad word again) native, attend FOR FREE!!! FOR FREE!!! and they still complain. It just blows my mind. If theUniversity is forced to change the name...i dont know what i'll do...Fighting SIOUX is just a bad-ass name.
ps - Im three parts Native american...while they are small parts, im Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Seminole.

I think the idea is that Sioux was never a self-given name to the this group of native americans and is actually a derogatory name given by the French meaning snake...Now granted 'Sioux', in my opinion, has been accepted to some extent by that group of native americans.... (just search 'Sioux' on google and see how many sioux sponsored organizations show up)
I believe I took that class too last semester as a night class at MSU. Very interesting class...
I wonder if the tribe council is considering the possiblility that natives may lose a lot of benefits if the name change takes effect.
If UND has to change their name to something different, do you think UND would really still be offering these benefits since they'll have to pay a large amount of $money$ to make the change?
I'm sure one of the first expenses they would cut would be these benefits to natives..
This could create an up-roar with natives who may go to the tribe council and complain...
Since many agree the name should stay, including natives, I think UND should let it be known that this may be an outcome.. People losing a benefit or having to pay more money usually gets people a little ambitious to give an opinion. And show which way they support. Unless UND has a contract on these benefits...

I can see many of your points. I can't really see the university getting rid of it's Native American assistance programs however. Regardless of the name these programs are offered by many universities to varying degrees.
The point I'd like to bring up is if this change does occur there had better be some follow up actions. As already mentioned and businesses using the name "Sioux" should be forced to change their name, as well as all of the textbooks in circulation. I know the vast majority of texts that I read during school did not refer to the Lakota (sorry if I spelled that wrong) but they did to the Sioux. This cannot be an isolated incident. If the Lakota are truly in support of this change (which I support them if they are) then it needs to be a overall change. Their tribe needs to be in favor of "eradicating" that term from any facet of education/business/culture. If they are not willing to stand up and make this form of a sweeping change then the matter needs to be looked into further. There will have to massive amounts of government funding to help with this as well. This would be a massive financial expenditure to change countless names and advertising material alone, not to mention the editing, reprinting and restocking of textbooks.
Like I've said before if this is a term that is truly offensive then it needs to be stopped. I had never heard of the "little snake" connotation of the word. I do think that likening the word Sioux to derogatory terms used against African Americans is a little excessive, but I can see how the reference can be used to draw attention to the case.
Well there is my 2-bits... Flame away...

alright a few points I would lIke to make.
I am A Lakota SIOUX, of the burnt thigh nation, (rosebud sioux tribe as the more common name).
NOT every single native gets a check from the goverment, just like not every "white trash" baby making machine gets money from them as well.
I DO NOT get these things nor WILL EVER accept them.
the point was made "we" call each other sioux's, THATS NO DIFFRENT then when a few african amer people call them selves the Ner's. Have you ever seen a white guy go to his friends and introduce his african friends as , "here are my Ner friends?" lmfao case in point Katt williams lmfao.
In the end i could give 2 shits less, If you are wonder what you should call me, it turns out I have an individual name, its Justin, and my real last name is Longcrow, yup thats right, Justin Longcrow.
so I hope there is no confusion as what to call a group of sioux, they all have names lmfao.
And as far as the fighting sioux "logo" I think its done in a tasteful manner.
there are a few people that are looking for money from this and that can be had by any "group" of people.
BUT if the have to they have to change it to something else I would lIke to see them change it to the UN Fighting honkies........
if some could nt tell I was more or less showing you what it feels for some people you take pride in what they are, VS what people call them.
But I make my 35k a year and I'm happy. Oh and I work for every penny of it.
thanks.

I really wouldn't give 2 shits less if they did change it to the "Fighting Honkies", so I'm with you on that. Let's change it to that and see just how little the NCAA does to stop it.
