Project: putting a real motor in a RX-7
-
So, i figured i would start this thread off for zac, being i am doing the work at the time. Anyway we will post pics as this goes of progress and cool new stuff that shows up!
Look what i got today! And as expected, i took one pic and the camera died. What i accomplished today was removing that mess of a harness, EGR, and pulling the fan and accesories off.
1999
LM7 - 4.8L with 9.7:1 compression
4l60-E
63,000 milesThe plan for this project is to get this thing into Zacs car, and have it stay under 2600lbs. Target HP is around 500whp@10psi on the stock parts for now, and it will likely do 10s@135 or so. Parts that will be used are:
Grannys Speed Shop mounts, crossmember and driveshaft
Pro Products Typhoon intake (same as mine)
42# or 65# injectors
Medium sized used camshaft, most likely a 2003 ZO6 piece
HP Tuners tune with 2.5bar speed density upgrade
backwards stock manifolds
Borg Warner S400, 75mm with 83-trim turbine in a 1.10A/R housing
Tial 44mm wastegate -
FYI the prof products intakes make LESS power than a LS1 when they get hot, which would be after about 3 dyno pulls (or 1/2 hour street cruising). Ask me how i know- they do work fine when cool. They do look OK though- money is better spent on a composite (although more). S400 might also be pretty bad on a 4.8- they don't like to spool too much on a 400 inch motor with good parts, but if your building for the future it should be cool. Sounds like a good project.

wow........ thanks gary, now i wont sleep

all the granny speed stuff will be here next week sometime
Gary is doing some wiring and helping jason paint it all up to perfection like always......... hoooray, ........thanks you two
andy, what do suggest being my best intake choice be then?? some sort of aftermarket composite or a stock ls1/ls6/ls2 manifold??................ I want something clean/simple
That is not your typical 1.32 s400 either, it is a smaller turbine and tighter housing, you prolly realized that though........... You still think it would be a lag monster???????? I can't go smaller than what the rotary had

So is Zac ditching the haltech?Yeah....... I wanted to keep the electronic tranny and all the options HP tuners gives you in controlling that whole system
Plus my E8 only has 4 ignition and 4 injector channels..... so i would of had to batch fire some injectors on the TB and waste fire the spark to get'r to work............ or get the E11 which has like 1000 outputs lol

Why not reuse your 42? You got it back didn't you?

i still cant believe it...........V8 in zacs rx7.......never did i ever see that coming.

well best of luck with the swap man!

i commend you for the LS swap... I think there is going to be more than one non-GM LS car looming around fargo, FYI!. The FAST intake is the best, although they are spendy (FAST 90mm / 90 mm t-body). Weiand has a newer composite intake as well that is better than the FAST and only $550ish, but I am not sure if it is production, yet. TPIS make a LS6 with a modifed 90 inlet that works just as good as the FAST as well. if you got to TPIS.com they have there dyno comparison. The prof products isn't a bad piece, but they heat soak terribly (really thick alum) they get to the point you can't even put your hand on them (especially forced induction). I'm sure that turbo will spool, but it may be pretty late, not sure. Good luck though, I have seen quite a few of those swaps personally and they are clean and lotsa options for parts later... If you change from the truck intake you will need to change accessory brackets and crank pulley, I BELIEVE. just an warning.
