I'm curious about which specific 3.0 L BMW I6 we're talking about.
Possibilities include:
M30B30 from E12 5 series. This is a 30+ year old 12v engine.
S50B30US from E36 M3, model year 1995 ONLY
M54B30 from E46 330i and E39 530i
N54 NA from E90 3 series
3L twin turbo from E90/E60 335/535The shit-hot BMW I6 engines were the S38 in the 1st and 2nd gen M5, at 3.5 and 3.6 liters, respectively (and 3.8l in the 93-95 years in Europe), and the S54 in the E46 M3 at 3.2L.
All of the 3 Liter BMW I6 engines have been in garden variety applications, unless you make an exception for the 95 M3's S50B30US. Note the "US" designation on that motor -- the Euro E36 M3 engine was actually a "true" M engine with ITBs, etc, and made 286 hp instead of the 240 of the US engine, which was basically an M50 325i bumped up to 3L, with hotter cams/intake/exhaust/software. It's not a bad engine, but lots of people refer to the USA market E36 M3 as the "330is" or "332is" because it's engine is a totally different ball of wax from the European and rest-of-world model.
The final Evo-2 or Evo-3 configuration of the E36 M3 in europe had 321hp on 3.2L. A sequential gearbox was also available.
The S54 engine (E46 M3) has a factory revlimit of 8000 rpm, although early model years were grenading due to main bearing failure. Apart form this hiccup, it probably represents the pinnacle of the BMW I6 engine for street applications. The S38B38 (euro) would be another notable contender, making 340hp in factory trim with a ~7000 rpm revlimit.
If it stays warm I'll soon pull my gen-1 M5 out of winter storage and anyone so inclined can hear what the 1st gen S38 engine w/ a 9lb flywheel sounds like winding up and down
That powerplant is a detuned race motor....put into production in 1988 it uses Motronic EFI, DOHC, shim-over-bucket, ITBs, double-row timing chain, and made 256hp on 3.5L w/ 9.8:1 CR. The euro version was of course better @ 286hp on 10.x:1 compression, hotter cams, equal length headers, and no catalyst.
