right across the alley from me there is low income housing where you pay a percentage of your income to live there. Come over some time and I will introduce you to the families that I know that live there.

I still don't understand why it is societies job to make poor people not poor? If you don't work, you don't get paid. At least that's how it works for me...

It's not societies job to make them un-poor. That is a choice they have to make on their own. I do think that we as a society have an obligation to help those that have fallen on hard times w/ temporary help, which is what the premise of my ideal welfare system is based on.

Right. I am all for temporary programs such as Unemployment, Welfare as long as you have found a job and are working to get off of the program, etc.
As a matter of fact, welfare should not be paid unless the person on the receiving end can show they have a job or are actively seeking employment.

Or unless you are seriously ill/injured to the point where you can no longer work.
