Ok so let me get this straight, you had to do community service for confirmation and scouts, but you're against doing it for your country? I realize they are "voluntary" organizations, but as a kid, are they really? Most kids(me being one) go through confirmation whether they like it or not. Scouts may be different, but I know my parents tried getting me to go too...

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

I neither trust the feds to choose what "community service" means in a way that I'd agree with, nor do I see that they have any constitutional authority to require children to work.

Wasn't the rise of the labor movement in the US precisely to get away from child labor?

But now the government is going to require it?

The only silver lining in this is that it may only be required if you're going to public school or trying to get government college loans. I've always planned on having my kids be homeschooled and to not need government money if they go to college, so maybe there's a shred of hope left after all. I'm nowhere near as mad if there's a way to opt-out.

Yeah maybe the feds arent the way to go on enforcing this, But I think it would be better if they left it up to the school districts. I think its a decent Idea. Besides a lot of colleges these days require so many hours of community service to get into certain programs or even just to graduate.

Like if High school childeren were required 10 hours every year It wouldnt be that bad or hard to get it done. They may learn some great things by doing this. All they would have to do is volunteer somewhere, like a nursing home, childrens hospital, big brothers-big sisters programs. I know if this was there when I was in high school it probably would have made me a better person, or else I would have found a loop hole to get out of it.

So its a good concept but how to go about it I dont know exactly.

I was going to quote some people...but eh..I'm kinda speaking to everyone on this.

Right now we have mandatory programs in our schools already that are geared towards physical fitness, world history, computers, etc...not all the best examples, but what I am saying is that there are core programs in our school systems already that are designed to provide the basic necessities for surviving in the world (IOW, required classes vs elective classes). Why shouldn't good will towards your fellow man be part of that training? Ultimately, wouldn't community service lessen the expense of government in providing care for those on welfare or other social programs? Wouldn't it ultimately inspire people to donate to charities as they get older so that (ideally) we could cut back on the social programs already in place? I keep hearing that we want the gov't to stop these programs and for charity work to be carried out by churches and other charities...I also hear that enough is not being done at these churches and charities....isn't it possible that this will help? By teaching mankind to help one another instead of relying solely on the government for help/assistance aren't we raising a better generation of citizens?

Yes, I know that you are planning on homeschooling Thrash, and I applaud your efforts on this, however (and I could be wrong here) I believe that there are required courses even for home schooling to get a diploma (or equivalent) from the state...this may or may not be one of them.

That is exactly what I take out of it. Aren't we supposed to lead by example? Maybe if the world sees the "glorious" nation of the US putting our materialistic views aside for an hour a week, they may look at us differently, or do the same thing...

I don't know about you guys but our class was required to go do some community service before we could graduate...so...some schools already require it.

I was just wondering how many people felt the Patriot Act was an intrusion of privacy into our lives and think it's one of the worst things ever, yet are in favor of forcing kids to serve their communities.

I mean, what's wrong with the government listening in on you if you're not doing anything wrong right?

By the way I do NOT support the patriot act, nor do I support this "America Serves" plan either.

I understand what you are saying. You already stated you were involved in community service in class, all but stating this plan is already in effect in some places. The point I think you are trying to make is you disagreeing with it being federally setup or mandated, right? If that is the case, then I do see the idea.

If this does end up happening, I think it would work a lot better completely blended in the cirriculum. Kids will be a lot more excited to do it if it's basically a "field trip". Field trips of any kind were the best kind, just to get out and about...

you arn't getting it, it's not that it's so crazy of an idea or that it is just helping the comunity it is about them forcing you to be a humanitarian, if you don't want to help you shouldn't be forced to. it is the right and the responsablity of the parents/family to teach kids how to help and what it means to help. not the government.

this is just yet another way they are controlling the way ppl live there lives.

do you ppl even understand freedom? the "freedom" to choose to "not" help.

I will be avoiding any compulsory education "requirements" that I disagree with. It's that simple.

When I was in school there was no compulsory "community service". We visted nursing homes and sung Chrismas Carols and it was a great time. But the feds weren't going to seize me out of my home if my dad didn't want me to go for some reason.

                                        I'm worried this is different.
