That is a true statement, but sometimes backpressure is your friend (if naturally aspirated) and can actually help increase torque. -

It all depends on whats used to resonate as well. Some factory resonators are very restrictive and hinder airflow but alot of aftermarket exhaust systems that have resonators built in have a quality straight through design.
I had SLS do my exhaust and I love the sound. it sounds great but it's too loud for me so I'll probably add a resonator to mellow it out a little bit. The Thrush glasspacks make great resonators without restricting alot either. They are straight through and have a perforated core with noting protruding into the exh path. So it deadens the sound w/out alot of backpressure. As far as turbo cars go, even with no resonators and minimal muffling, they are alot quieter than their N/A counterparts. That's because the turbo itself acts as it's own resonator. -
