BMWs and Audi's have had sealed ball joints for at least 20 years. I've not heard of this happening to them, and all of them get more track time than a lexus, and some are even heavier than a GS.

What happened here? The shaft out of the joint just failed?

Good news is that this shouldn't be a big deal to fix unless the fender and other shit need to be replaced as well. Can't tell from the pics.

No idea what exactly happened...I can try get a better picture of the carnage before I leave tonight. Looks like the joint just sheared off though!

The fender is sort of bunged up but not TOO bad, hell right now I'm at the point that I can leave this car sit for the next few months and drive the mustang. I'll more than likely get it all fixed up though within the week (pending no surprises) and be back to normal.

90% if not more companies use sealed steering and suspension components in their vehicles. Cost is the big reason. Yes, even the imports do this. Just in one model lineup, the savings is in the millions. Oh, and I've seen this in EVERY brand of car out there. Most of the time, it is caught far before it gets to this. Sorry to see your problem. It is a tits ride fo sho.

Actually when it was making the noise we had it up in the air twice and checked ball joints/tie rod but obviously didn't catch the problem.

As for the mustang it sounds like it was only in about 4-5 inches of water so it's still driveable (I believe). Will find out what condition that is in tonight probably.

Same tow guy towed a car for me last night around 10:00-11:00.
He was one of the coolest tow guys I have dealt with.

He was probably talking about you with me because he got some calls for his next few tows while he was helping me I think and that was around 9...

I agree he was very nice.

I'd be nice too if I was making commission on a $170 job though.

First time there was no weight on the tire.

2nd time it was "up in the air" on big ramps that allowed me to turn the wheels still but have room to be underneath it as well.

Either way we obviously didn't know what we were looking for otherwise we (might have) caught it.

Field in the back ground looks kinda familiar... shouldn't be driving over closed bridges lol i drive like 5 mph on the gravel part. Holy 170 to tow it for 50 bucks I would of towed it 40ft to my driveway and u could of fixed it there.

Bah I've driven over it many times with no problems! I was only accelerating towards the very end when it turns back into tar (northbound obvioulsy) but there was still enough of a bump to allow the suspension to drop out from under the wheel hub.

I actually only had it towed about 4 miles south of there too so that saved me a ton of money doing that but yes...170...If i'd known who you were I would have much preferred that option.

Yes but..."stuff breaks" usually doesn't include ball joint detaching and wheel falling off.

Happened to me at 3am. Pretty much what you're describing too. It was noisy for like a day, quit making noise, and like 2 days later there I was. Even had the appt to get it looked at as well lol.

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!
