ipod debate issues

a couple of us have been having various debates that are merely theoretical at this point. any input would be appreciated
one of my arguments is that it would be possible to install a larger harddrive into a 5g ipod and then just do the basic repair to restore functionality with more space. as a follow-up to this idea, i think it would also be a possibility to get a zif cable to connect to the ipod logic board and then (using a couple of other connectors), have a sata or ide drive of any size connect to the ipod. after running the repair... voila! 250gb or even 2tb of ipod data!this page has something similar to my plan: http://www.command-tab.com/2005/03/13/ipod-super/
jim, do you have much experience in this field? i would anticipate you to be the best source of info on hacking the ipod.

What generation Ipod? Touch and Iphone use flash RAM, and a self signed logic, the details on that are unsure. 5th Gen and lower are quite easy to do, exactly as the link as followed, only problem your going to find is Q&A on standard desktop/notebook drives (yes even notebooks) aren't designed for volatile movements such as the 2 particular brands (Toshiba and Hitachi made 2 specific drives for Apple)

Are your questions more relating to the actual process of opening the ipod up? If so, there are plenty of tutorials on that process specifically out there.

i guess i didn't specify a couple of things.
since this is a debate, i assumed everyone would understand that the other side of the debate is the converse of my arguments: the larger drive would not be recognized in the same way because of the need for a firmware update (or something similar), and using various connectors to attach a sata drive would not work for (approximately) the same reason.

Using a larger HD in an iPod is no problem, but for bigger drives you need to source a different power supply.
Standard drives inside the iPods are 1.8inch drives, although I'm sure you could rig up some adapter to use larger IDE drives. Its POSSIBLE, maybe, to use a sata drive using a SATA / IDE adapter inbetween.

with my car stereo, an external usb hdd takes about 20 seconds to be recognized and for music to start playing. with an ipod, it's much faster (probably because of the index), and there are more options. unless i find a way to keep the deck powered through ignition (i stop the engine at long lights, it improves my mileage by almost 10%) without running a wire to a toggle switch and then the deck, this seems like the better way go.
given this situation, i would be interested in other ideas that anyone can offer, but i'm still interested in finding a way to get a sata drive to function with an ipod (for geek value, if nothing else)

You would need one of those, as well as an external DC power supply for the drive itself, and then you'd have to match the pins and solder wires or use that second link's adapter.
Not to mention most SATA drives will die in a car, unless you are using SSD or something of that nature. It's way more cost / effort then it's worth IMO.

i found some stuff on addonics.com that looks like it will be useful, but i haven't decided for sure. i'll browse around those other sites.
i was planning to use some sort of shock absorbing system, but i am still a little unsure at this point. i'm leaning toward a laptop drive, and i'm currently doing some experimenting with one in an external enclosure, but it's just connected as a usb, fat32 device.
until the cost gets above $1.875/gb for 160+, it's still cheaper than a 160gb ipod.
