Dell has decent customer support once you get it through the idiot's head that you know exactly what is wrong and what you need.This. I think they have made a note on my account that I am more than capable of diagnosing my own issues. They usually offer to send "their" screwdriver etc with incase I feel like fixing it myself.

I just build my desktop to keep it up to date, gonna buy a laptop soon tho and prolly gonna go with dell..I tell everyone this, it doesn't matter what brand you get for the most part, just make sure you get a kick ass accidental warranty. It is pretty much worth its weight in gold after one incident. After all, you're only buy a guaranteed piece of shit.

My family has had a few HP laptops, with a bunch of problems.

Apple refused to honor the applecare 3yr warranty on my wife's ibook. The hard drive died. The guy at the apple store in minneapolis said that there was evidence of a spill, and so they weren't going to honor anything.
(We never spilled anything in that machine, and even if we did, a spill wouldn't cause a mechanical click-of-death failure in a vacuum sealed hard drive.)
Fuck apple.

But how do you REALLY feel thrash

Gateway got the battery to me by Wednesday morning, which was when they told me it would be there. My only complaint was that the tech I talked to was a moron and wasted mine and his time. I understand trying things once (maybe twice, just to be sure) to trouble shoot....anyway, got it all figured out, computer runs great (like it has since day one...well, day one of Windows 7 anyway)

A friend of mine's motherboard died in his like a week before the warranty was up. Apple told him that they wouldn't honor it because it was too close to the end of the warranty and they thought he did it on purpose to get a new computer. He ended up paying almost $600 to get it fixed.

True story. I went to the Mall of America apple store w/ a friend bc his HD was dead, he was under the "applecare" warranty but they claimed it was dropped (it wasn't), and wanted a few hundred to fix it.
