Remember that a 640 acre section that holds 1 foot of water is about 200 million gallons of water. Most are setup to hold about 3 feet or .65 billion gallons without taking out roads. I know there are plans laid out for some areas down here of about 8-10 sections to hold water, (6.5 billion gallons+!) but if these do not play out there really isnt much you northerners can hope for.

which sounds like big numbers - but the figures I've heard thrown around about retention is that 400,000-600,000 acres 1' deep of water would only drop the river a couple feet.

Honestly, I think the solution needs to be a combination of all the options. Dig the diversion, add some temporary retention (waffling - dams won't do it), and have protection in place for 35' through town.

I just bought a house last nov. on 7th st s and basically 37th ave s in moorhead, pretty much fucked if the flood is worse than last year cause they put the dike on 8ths st last year. At any rate, I have flood insurance and an unfinished basement, so i will just be putting the things i want replaced in my basement and not worry about much else while i'm out sandbagging...

I live two blocks from that drain as well but according to the maps it'll take about 45 ft of water to start nipping at my property line.

i'm not looking forward to the idiots driving sand trucks who think traffic signals don't apply to them. there were at least two times i almost got crushed by a truck on 32ave s during a busy traffic period. there were significantly more times that i saw rogue trucks forcing dozens of people into near destruction situations on 25st. that was just the handful of hours i drove around last year.

Alot of the trucks didnt have to obey the traffic signals because they had to get places. If you watched the news they told you that

                      a) i didn't see anything in the newspapers
                      b) there was nothing on the vehicles to indicate their exemption
                      c) ambulances and police vehicles can't just go through lights without regard for traffic, even with sirens and flashing lights
                      d) with drivers as pathetic as this area has already, why would i expect anything different?

Im pretty sure for most of the flood the fargo pd told everyone to gtfo the roads and move the hell over for sand trucks. You make yourself sound like one of those pathetic drivers. You must not have been sandbagging because everywhere i sandbagged we were always running out of sand and sand bags.

how dare i bring you sandbaggers food? how dare i make sure you sandbaggers from out of town have a hotel to accommodate you? just because i wasn't sandbagging i was being worthless? your ire is misdirected.

if i'm not glued to the television and don't listen to local radio during catastrophes, how am i to know that these mandates have been declared? why should i be blamed for following the written law instead of the ad-libbed martial law? like i said above, emergency vehicles owe the same caution to their driving as we do.

The driver of a class A authorized emergency vehicle may:
                          b. Proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign, but only after slowing down as may be necessary for safe operation.

                          http://www.legis.nd.gov/assembly/58-2003/bill-text/DAUN0300.pdf

sadly, i'm unable to find something to specify exactly what a "class a emergency vehicle" is, so i would appreciate if someone (i'm looking at you chuck 😉 ) can clarify or offer links.

                            haha.

im on the other side of 8th, got the code red call, and the closest thing that came to flooding my house was some backed up corner drains on 5th street.

                            PANIC BUTTON!!!!!111

that 8th st dike was a genius plan. way to go voxland.

Anything in your basement that is able to be moved with human strength is not covered by flood insurance. Only your electrical and hardline appliances(water softner, water heater, furnace) Trust me, if you have an unfinished basement and you don't plan on making a dike out of anything other than sandbags, your flood insurance is pointless.

Wouldn't it all be up to your insurance provider? As each is different and has different fine print...

Obviously not, as I'm sure Adam is smart enough to use google to research his point. A google search won't yield anything other than the case studies he mentions.

I have the ND Century Code bookmarked, I got the website off a law book of my wife's. Here it is in case anyone else wants to look at it: http://www.legis.nd.gov/information/statutes/cent-code.html

                                          Any other questions?
