My dad checked the "interested in a buy out" box. I don't see this as begging them for money? He bought on the river and understands the scope of what needs to be done to fight flood. The city wants to buy Every house in Moorhead that is on the the river that is not able to be saved by sandbags. We qualify, so why not? Again, please explain this "Begging theory" John, I'd like to know where you got this.

Also, where the fuck did you get the Idea that their house isn't worth anything? If youde do some more "public information searching you would see that it was appraised preflood 2008 for 198,000 dollars... The house has been flooded once, in 97, which is before we bought it. Mind you 99 percent of houses on the river in 97 were flooded, so that really doesn't matter anymore for prices of houses..

Checking the "interested in a buy out" box is different than "our house got put HIGH on the buyout list" (asking to be bought out vs. being told to get out). To me it sounds more like when approached about being bought out your parents said something along the lines of "sure, we're sick of this shit" (which is fine, I've been through the shit and if you don't want to fight any more then don't. Trust me I completely understand, I was living in grand forks in one of the hardest hit areas in 97. Just quit trying to be all e-cool about it, if they don't want to do it anymore that's fine).

As far your home's value I got it from the fact that appraisals are bullshit. Your "preflood 2008" value is just that....BEFORE THE FLOOD! Houses are not worth what an appraiser (government or private) tells you. Houses are worth what you can sell them for, and I guarantee that anyone looking for a house in the FM area right now doesn't have "high probability of flooding" on their wants list.

In 2001 my house was valued at $350,000 by tax appraisers. Shortly there after the owners died and the house was turned into a rental property. In 2007 the house was appraised at $225,000 (again tax). In 2008 the house was appraised at $178,000 (private) at the time of our purchase, I bought the house for $163,000 and I'm paying taxes on a home valued at $225,000. Which brings me to my point private appraisers said 178,000, government said $225,000, and I only paid $163,000. Therefore the house at the time of purchase wasn't worth $350,000, $225,000, or $178,000, it was only worth $163,000.

The theory of begging is related to the fact that as far as any person with a head on their shoulders is concerned the house has ZERO value due to where it is located, actually it would be a loss at this point. If the house is bought out by the government then you will be accepting a government handout along the lines of "we're sick of this shit, but no one will buy our house at this point so please mr. government give us some money for no reason...we were too stupid to do some research before we bought this house and now we want you to make up for that fact...oh and once you have wasted money due to our lack of forethought why don't you waste some more money to pay a crew to come level the place."

Now, I've said my point and I'm done with all the petty bullshit. Just quit trying to be Mr. I'm soo tough and cool and just be a regular guy, you'd be amazed at how many people would actually think that you are probably a decent guy deep down if you would just quit being a fucking dipshit.

Hey everyone....Anonymously tell joel what you really think of him

            LMFAO:icon_cheers: awesome

ps, his house is worth whatever it is assessed at for taxes. if he doesnt sell it, the city will have to build one inconvenient dike AROUND HIS PROPERTY. they have to buy it to build a dike and save the town. thats not begging, thats being smart and getting the most out of HAVING to move. more win? MOAR WIN!!!111 something is going to be done on the mhd side and its not going to involve filling 1000000000000000 sand bags every march.

the point is, its not really going to be a choice. they are going to get a fair offer and they are going to have to take it. how you misconstrue that is beyond me. in reality you should mock the city planners who agreed to develop it.

Getcher green hat, we are goin fishin.

Actually, the appraisal values of all of the buyout houses in Moorhead is What they are worth. When didn't plan on moving until they offered to possibly buy our house. So, when the city is wanting to pay us fair market value, and they appraise our house specifically for the buyout, and they come up with that number, thats what our house is worth, right? I don't want to argue this anymore either, but if you're the bigger man, why don't you take that link off your sig?

for starters, the neighborhoods along the river on both sides are some of the most desirable neighborhoods in town. secondly, you are dumb, and here is why:

the entire city was developed along the river, both fargo and moorhead. it is not like we are talking about 200 houses. stop pretending it is only .05% of the people who deal with this. there was a dike on second street to protect downtown fargo. oak grove already set up flood protection. concordia and msum were evacuated last year. entire neighborhoods were evacuated last year. an evacuation plan was put together redirecting traffic on northbound interstates for fucks sake.

you guys are right, though, it is stupid of them to live there and it is pathetic they are begging for hand outs to relocate and alleviate pressure on the entire population to build permanent flood control. all of them are assholes for staying awake for a month and keeping the rest of us dry. what douchebags.

Getcher green hat, we are goin fishin.

Do people in Fargo-Moorhead not realize the flooding is mostly due to the growth and development of the land?? In 97, there were way less houses and developed land in the area. And now today, its like trying to contain what once fit in a bowl, into a glass, The water level is going to be higher as it is not spread out... City Developers should have thought of this as they were building, and not after the fact when it is harder to put up permanent flood protection.

And i do think the city should have had a buffer zone where people cant build like so many feet from the river. My parents house is on the river, but its 500 yards through the woods... Yes they had to dike last year, and will again this year, but it is also cause the house sits at 37.5 ft. The only difference is that there is plenty of room to dike.

Some of these houses are built right on the river, with minimal yard space to even think about building permanent flood protection. This year, the dike in my parents yard will be made permanent. It will be rocked and landscaped on the house side, and grassed on the river side. They know it has to be done, and thats part of living where they do. I think if you choose to live on the river like them, you gotta man up and not bitch about it when it floods. it was their choice to move there, and they knew the risks and are just dealing with it and say "it is what it is"
