I agree with what Wes says...
also if you haven't already, try posting on www.honda-tech.com. There's alot of knowledge and resources on that board.

Wrong, there is next to no information on 1g integra's on H-T. I own one and there's not much information about them or many active owners on any boards.http://www.g1teg.org/phpbb/index.php
Is the best resource I have found for 1g questions. -

Maybe not for integras...but there is tons of information on the D-series platform.I laughed when I read the title "D16a1" and "problem" in the same sentence...thats an oxymoron.
This is very true about d-series engines, but not so much for the d16a1. Its the red headed step child of the d-series.www.D-series.org Also has some information.

Setting base timing is still just adjusting the distributor. It really has nothing to do with the cam timing. You can have the distributor on tdc for the can that the distributor rides on but that still leaves the other cam that could be off. I wold just be sure of even the most easily overlooked things.

Just to clarify, he's sure the timing is not the problem. He understands the difference between cam timing and distributor base timing. We got to talking about compression testing and he told me he'd hate to even try cranking it over because it sounds bad. That made me wonder if something in the bottom end is bent or broken.

Is the best resource I have found for 1g questions.Bottom line is the d16a1 was not specific to the 1g Integra. On top of that this question is not even specific to the motor. It's a general, help my car doesn't sound good kinda question. One doesn't need to be an expert on the d16a1 or even hondas to be able to help troubleshoot. However, honda-tech does have a lot of knowledgable enthusiasts who can probably help you out.
Well if he doesn't want to compression test the car because of how it sounds he may as well start taking stuff apart. Take off the valve cover, and check out the head, or have a machine shop inspect it. Like Wes said, I would make the valves one of the first things I would check.
