Is The New Ford Mustang Better Than A BMW M3?Odd question to ask, right? But judging by the numbers, yes. Is that all there is to it?

In reality? Probably not, but then, "better" is relative. It's here that we'd caution you to remember the traditional line about apples, oranges, and comparisons. Both the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and the current BMW M3 offer staggering performance, V-8 power, and rear-wheel drive. One is a pedigreed European sport sedan, the other a charmingly raw piece of traditional American muscle. As to which one we like better, well, that depends on the day, our mood, the road, and how much diner food/schnitzel we had that morning. Different cars, different purposes, both awesome for entirely different reasons.

Ahhh ignorant narrow minded people. There is more to a car than performance numbers... Take one look at each interior and the engineering behind each...

Although, I will give it to Ford.. They have seriously steped their game up in almost every aspect.

They have put all the other US automakers to shame in the last couple years.

This is coming from a guy who used to/still kind of does HATE Ford, I mean hate...

Because the new ECOboost is way more bad ass?

Because the new SHO > any BMW.

The only performance number that really matters to me is $$$. The M3 can't touch the mustang. A top of the line mustang GT is just over 40k. How about a base 3 series, not even an M3?

I will jump on the 'I used to hate Ford, but am impressed for 2010+' bandwagon, however each of the 2 makers in question have pro's and con's.

A BMW is built significantly better than a Ford....however, I feel BMW OVER engineers the simplest of things, which results in many more 'moving' parts, and more things to come lose or break. Being there is a 30 step process to remove a window from a BMW, that means there is 30 more steps for something to go out of alignment or break. It also means more time to repair/replace, and at a repair shop, time is money.

Ford on the other hand mass produces the simplest of designs and does a 'fair' (at best) job of it. Their interiors are improving, but any installer will note that they are put together with 'cheap' in mind. You can replace all of the door panel clips in 10 seconds, and refresh the fitment, however it is inevitable that they will fail over time...This scenario applies to pretty much everything on a Ford....

Looking at the performance aspect of the 2...well...it appears that Ford is taking on the colossal giants from Europe and Japan. They still are building an inferior quality car, but they are also selling for significantly less, but performing near the same.... The solid rear axle on the Mustang kills me, but I would bet the majority of Mustang performance work is done at a drag strip, where the solid rear axle will be helpful. It is a cheap design, easy to upgrade, but sacrifices ride and overall feel.

I'm impressed with Ford, but still a few years away from considering buying one.

Solid Axle or not, they seem to do well against all the IRS cars in Grand Am Gt series racing.

Than what? Than the 8000+ RPM M motors with ITBs? Really?

Hope you like driving an automatic, Barbie.

The new SHO looks like an interesting car for people want a big 360hp sedan... like the Audi S8 would sell you back in 2001... or the M5 BMW would sell you back in 1993...

[both of which are cheaper than an SHO now but probably wont be in 5 years]

You can appreciate some of the good things Ford is doing without going off the deepend. There is one reason to prefer a Taurus SHO over a BMW: because your ass is too fat to fit in the BMW.

I agree with Thrash, the SHO really isnt anywhere near a 3 series let alone an M. Theyre sweet,we'll leave it at that.

For ride quality/interior yes there is no doubt I would want an M3 over the Mustang. Just like there is no comparison in the ride quality and interior quality between my Lexus and my Mustang. But for those on a "budget" (I don't really consider $31,000 to be budget material) I would no doubt pick the Mustang over the M3.

Although I must say, as far as reliability is concerned there is no question that the Mustang has been far more reliable than the Lexus. And when something does break or needs to be replaced, it is a lot cheaper AND easier to do on the Mustang than on the Lexus. Even something stupid like changing plugs requires you to take the entire top half of the engine off on the Lexus, the mustang is just moving around the plug wires.

I disagree with the Ford having inferior quality than a BMW. Ever since the 1980's every auto maker in the world has been trying to perfect the Toyota Processing System (TPS), yes even BMW. They have been trying to copy the higher quality manufacturing manufacturing while reducting production cost. I will agree that 10 years ago they would have been inferior, but not today. When it comes to quality, there is little difference between any of the major car companies. Ford started making extremely smart decisions a long time ago which is why they are so successful now.
