VIVA LA MEXICO
post 5 for me

I've been letting this one stew for a few days.. and I'm still not sure how the hell the school's actions made any sense to anybody. If anything, the students should have been given a cookie and a pat on the head.. I don't know if I even have anything in my closet with an American flag on it.
The students who complained about these kids' clothes need a reminder of where they are and why it's okay for them to complain - and get over the egocentric sensitivity issues.
If you expect people to be 'sensitive' to you to the point that they have to change who they are/what they say/what they wear/what they think - you've got the wrong expectations and you're imposing them on others' rights.
This whole situation was a major disappointment to me as an American and as a human being in general. How shitty is it as a Mexican (or Mexican-American) to have a celebrated holiday turned into "Mexican Theme Day" for a country full of people that have NO idea for the most part WHY they're (getting drunk) celebrating? A good handful of people out there every May 5th suddenly think, "OH, crap, that's what Cinco de Mayo means?" ..but that doesn't mean they know what the holiday is for.
What would we think if suddenly Brazil started celebrating our 4th of July by doing something completely unrelated (national rug-cleaning day or some crap), but doing it because it's American 4th of July? How was everybody's Boxing Day? Pretty good? I got piss-drunk, because it's Canada's Boxing Day, WOOOO!
Seriously, who here knows why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated? Boxing Day? Any of the multiple holidays we have through the year aside from Thanksgiving, July 4th, Christmas? (New Year's is an easy one.) Show of hands? Go ahead and raise them up. I don't remember what Cinco de Mayo is celebrated for, without looking it up. I do know a lot of people who use it as an excuse to get drunk. Same goes for a good number of other Americanized (get drunk) holidays. I'm only like 10% Irish heritage.. but I do get one day a year to let that shit out to play. Do I know why we're celebrating? (get drunk, yeah) ..eh, not well enough
Every one of those students at that school has the right to be -or not be- proud of who they are, and where they come from, no matter what day, or "whose" day it is. I'm ashamed that there are administrators and leaders in the system today who don't understand this.
(lol.. jesus.. /rant)
