Not to derail the thread (joking) but does anyone have an update on what is going on at the building... how bad the damage was and what not. Curious, since coverage was all over the place when it was burning but there hasn't been much since. Just wondering if anyone got hurt or whatnot. Had some friends that used to live there, glad they got out last year.

So you must have every peice of cothing, electronics, furniture, dishware, and everything else in your home inventoried with serial numbers and with receipts stored in a fire proof safe? If you don't, you have some nerve talking shit here.

I have my apartment insured for $20k if it was a total loss, i get a check for $20k, regardless of if I had $100 of stuff in there or $40k worth. I pay $12 a month for it, and I probably average about $12k max worth of stuff, and that is replacement cost. Total amount of what i would buy back is probably $8k at the most. Now if it got broken into and my coputers or TV stolen, yes I have that stuff inventoried and the list stored in 2 diffenent locations. You see, i learned how to be responsible when I got my own place, so I wouldnt have to go crying to anyone if it all went to shit

still working on finding a cause.
1st floor damage isn't bad, 2nd floor is so-so because the ceiling was pulled down in some places, 3rd floor is limited access (fire only).

I think I pay in the neighborhood of $150/year for renters insurance but that includes specific coverage for a couple other things (camera in particular) to cover any damaged caused by anything anywhere.

                  As dubbsy said,
When I was there taking pic's the firefighters that I were talking to tell me that:
1st floor is almost 100 percent intact with very minor water damage
2nd floor is about 90 percent intact with 1- maybe 2 total loss apartments and the rest have some smoke and water damage, and are a mess from insulation and falling ceilings.
3rd floor is almost a 100 percent loss.

car garage had 18 inches of water but all cars were driven out.
sounds like 3 or four dogs a cat and a bird were killed
                  no people were hurt.
two firefighters were trapped, and rescued unhurt.

As for the insurance thing, I don't think people are looking for handouts. Minus people like Grr, most people in Fargo/Moorhead are kind hearted people (North Dakota and Minn for that matter.) and will give weather they are asked or not.
That has been my experience anyway.

Right, the customers are the idiots because they signed a contract making them liable for the equipment? They wouldn't have to pay if they had insurance.

I insist that my renters have insurance, it's not my problem if they choose to ignore my advice. At my house, which is rented, I have a policy on it to cover medical liability damages at up to $10k/person before it breaks into the business liability claim coverage, and full replacement coverage on the structure (which includes major appliances, flooring, etc) with sewer and/or sump pump back-up coverage. At my studio, I have a $50k policy on equipment, but that is not a personal line, it covers everyone's equipment. My auto policy has the highest rental limitations and personal injury protection, plus a roadside assistance 800 number that gets me help right away, and I am covered when I deliver pizza. My watch is specifically included on my rental policy, and my last cellular phone was itemized on it until I decided the cheaper route is to use the insurance offered through Verizon. My satellite stuff is covered by the extra couple of dollars per month charge, and my DSL is also covered under a similar offering. This is just property insurance, no life or medical.

I'm in a prime position to say that the people without insurance on their stuff deserve to lose it. Grr is right, and I expect that most of those on here that aren't voicing thoughts are all thinking the same thing.

I'm all for helping with the immediate need of short-term housing, or some other staple of civilized life, especially when I am aware that only a few of us have the kind of liquid assets necessary to subsist until insurance picks up the tab, and there are some times when nothing else is available. Supporting these people because they won't do it themselves? I won't be part of that; that's empowering their laziness.

If you feel so sorry for these people, and you think they aren't wrong for refusing to insure themselves, then I assume you are offering all of the assets you have available to help them? Put your money where your mouth is, I am.

you dont think its the least bit tacky of cable one to be charging separate customers for smoke damage if if they werent liable for starting the fire?

this will blow up in cableones face i bet.
