Well... transmission is having problems, doesn't want to engage in drive. Reverse works. Code is P0720 (Output Speed Sensor), but I'm thinking the transmission just needs to be replaced. I can't do the work, and it'd be too expensive for me to do with labor to make the car worth it. Car-Part.com has used tranny's for $600 or so if you can do the labor.

    2000 BMW 323i
    Body has 169,xxx
19" Staggered Private Wheels w/ Good Tire Tread Left
    Rear Fenders are Rolled
    30% Tint
    Carbon Fiber Hood
    Black Kidney Grills
    Tein SS Coilovers
Kenwood Double Din w/ Double Din Conversion Kit
M3 SMG Steering wheel w/ Paddle Shifter Conversion

Just replaced the fan speed resistor, recharged the AC at the end of summer, new plugs and wires, motor is in good condition and runs fine. Replaced the windshield washer pump last fall.

Anyway, thought I'd post it here to see if somebody wanted it before I throw it up on Craigslist, car would have to be trailered from right by Downtown Minneapolis.

Just curious, have you checked to see if the speed sensor is loose/functioning properly?

Yeah, had it checked out at a shop where I got it towed yesterday, without tearing the transmission apart they estimated the transmission was probably done.

I know you are trying to help Jim out with a easy fix but usually output ss wouldn't affect operation, the input or main shaft speed sensors would though. Have to remember it's a Bimmer. Like the shop told Jim, trans is probably a goner, the tcu probably could tell input shaft was turning and in gear but output shaft not turning so it throws a code not knowing internals are bad. Jim does it show going into gear just not moving?

I dont know, the dashboard lcd where it shows the gears usually just has a big "!" on it. Pulled up to a stop light, started off and it just felt like it slipped really bad, transmission warning light came on, had to pull out of traffic (so it was still working at this point, just not very well) by the time I got off the road it wouldn't go forward at all, which lead me to be believe tranny's got something internal wrong with it (rather then just a sensor).

They work really well, its wired in to the shift tronic, left is down shift, right is up shift. Same functionality of moving the gear lever up and down but on the steering wheel (alot of the newer 335's and such have this as an option now).

Do you have any links for where I could obtain one? My roommate is looking at M3's and having that as an option opens up many more options for cars that are for sale.

? the parts to do it? It pretty much just works on the E46 and such becuase the slip ring for SMG works similarly (you need the slip ring, the smg wheel and the wiring)

No the original hood got tossed, and I have stock wheels but my dad has an e46 too, they are going to him for winter wheels. I'll take some photos when its not snowing 18" of the bay and interior.
