Nice post! Could the above be done by all hand, one of those wax-master deals, or with a DA?

That could not be done by hand !!!! unless you spent 8 hours on it.. Even a DA would take a while to cut that many scratches out..

How about a relatively scratch free car and a fine cut polish, would a DA work then?

Yea a Da would work fine then, I would get a few different buffing pads and a few different types of polish/ compounds..

I've got a meguire's #7 and #2...Im assuming this would be like a medium and a fine cut respectively...followed up by a good wax?

I have read that with a DA you want to turn the air down so as not to cause too much heat...true?

Whats wrong with meguiar's? You never told me what you use. How is it over priced? IMO they make some of the best compunds.

seanjohn, #7 is a glaze, not a polish. #7 has a very high oil content and is also non drying. It takes a certain technique to apply and remove in order to get it to work right. It also doesn't last very long at all.

Also, if you are going to us a non rotory buffer, use #83. Also, #2 is intended for single stage paint, #83 works better on modern, thinner, softer paint.

This is the buffing/wax process is use, it is only part of my paint process
                  #83 (if needed), #9, #7, S100.

I use automagic for most everything... I like automagic, although eagle one offers a really good polish/glaze cant remember the name but its some blue shit and it worked great when I was detailing.

I used a dewalt rotary buffer dont remember which one. We used meguires, then moved to eagle one. I went out and bought most of my own stuff when I worked there for my personal vehicles though because they always seemed to buy the cheapest shit eagle one offered.

As far as meguiars went it was way over priced for how much we used, and the compounds didnt cut most of the scratches out of the vehicles we buffed... perhaps its the compounds they ordered, but I prefered automagic to meguiars. Shit they were paying $40 a gallon for meguiars compounds.

We also used liquid luster which I thought to be one of the best quick hand polishes on the market if you wanted a nice shine after a wash and didnt have much time to use much else.

For how much the average person uses (or should use) in compounds, spending a little bit more on a product you know works won't hurt. Hell, I still have a 8/10ths of a quart of #83 that will probably last me 5 years.

Yeah... I prefer automagic tho... its just as expensive but I think it does a better job. But to each their own right? I havent buffed a car in about 6months because I dont have access to a good buffer. Although I might go pick one up because I can get discounts through my current job... gotta love working for a mechanical contractor.
