Cheapo systems

looking to add some bass to my system. don't really want to dump a lot of cash into it. Wondering how good of sound you can get out of the cheap subs from places like Checker and Walmart. Since i don't want to blow out my back window this seems to be a good option.

in my experience, you generally get what you pay for. ie rockford fosgate, audiobahn, and mtx are expensive for a reason. there are other brands that are expensive for the name alone (sony), ask aroundrockford fosgate and audiobahn are expensive paper weights, they are both garbage audiobahn especially (trust me ive owned them before and wouldnt recommend them to anyone who isnt deaf)
if you are looking for a good cheap sub, look at the one im selling. or if you are looking for a new one i would recommend a brand that most of you have never heard of, its called Resonant Engineering. i personally just bought a 8" RE sub. it hasent arrived yet, but when it does i will let you all know how it is. form everything i have heard about these it should be good.:D

i got some pioneer subs i've been looking to get rid of for a long time now - $50.00 for both of them they are 12's.

Right there you go and I am sure that you can find a cheap amp to power those subs in classifieds. -
hey I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I have a pair of 12" kicker CVR's with box and an amp to power them, the subs are in mint condition and the kicker amp is only a couple months old. I'm not sure how cheap I can go without losing too much, but if you are interested let me know. I'm rebuilding my system and want something different, but they sound great.

its all what you want, audiobahn is a very good brand if you want spl, but if you want sq they aren't the best to go with. they also take lots of juice to power. i'd say find some pioneer or jensen subs. both are descent and will bump good enough for a cheap price.

from what i've heard of the audiobahn subs...only the top of the line audiobahn stuff is good....otherwise its not real good.
-
i've heard dual subs that were pretty loud...guy had a nice amp hooked up to them though.
-
I remember making my friends JBL's scream with my 1000d. I think that the amp makes all the difference rather than the sub. My Thunder 8000's were weak as hell until I put the 1000d to them.

How come Audiobahn was the Manufacturer of the Year at CES this year? How come they have grown faster than nearly any other company in the history of car audio (Excluding Rockford Fosgate)? How come I managed to qualify a car for USAC-i world finals last year w/ a pair of 12" Audiobahns and be just 4.5 dB off of the world record for that class? Yes, I will agree, some of the lower end audiobahn is no better than the lower end of any other manufacturer, you get what you pay for. Also, maybe it was the enclosure that made you think it sounded like ass? You do realize that the enclosure is 99% of what makes the product sound good, right? Rockford was one of the pioneers of car audio, I personally don't like some of their design changes over the years but I'm not gonna rip on them for being garbage. Also, you have to remember that Rockford has another completely seperate line that is not sold at hack shops like Best Buy.
Point is, almost all manufacturers have entry, mid, and high level products. They need to in order to fill all the niche's in the industry. Some people are perfectly happy w/ a $50 subwoofer. Others prefer a $800 subwoofer.

Take any two amplifiers of decent quality w/ exactly the same power output, no equalization/sonic enhancement circuits enabled, etc...and place them on the same sub and I'd be willing to put money on you never ever being able to consistently tell which amp was hooked up. Autosound 2000 issued that challenge about 8 years ago w/ a $5000 prize (or something like that anyway) if someone could pick theirs out 10/10 times....a couple thousand people later and noone walked out with their money.

I agree w/ chuck ....enclosure is a HUGE deal......and yeah...the newer rockford stuff is shitty like the punch stage 1, 2, and even the 3 is pretty bad.....but you can get the good stuff like the Power series...is great along with the power series amps...they are spendy but worth it.....
as for audiobahn i've heard some of their subs and some were shitty ..the low end..and some were damn good...the higher end....and i do have some of thier 6x9's the most expensive ones....400 watts max for a pair of audiobahn 6x9's is pretty damn impressive don't ya think....only bad thing is ..is that the damn magnet is so big that they dont fit in my eclipse!!!

but anyway.. to sum up this thread.. 99% of the time you get what you pay for when it comes to car audio.

if you want some cheap subs just go to walmart and get some of the pioneers, one of my friends has 1 12' pioneer from walmart and its loud as hell.
-
dual subs maybe cheap and farly loud but suck, had them in my GP and a dual deck deck started eating CD's at 2weeks old and after it was out for like a month dropped to a 1/3 of origanal price and bestbuy had one in stock. and in the summer the subs worked when they wanted to

ok, let me clarify a little bit....if all you want is something that makes noise, then something like rf or audiobahn or even the kicker square subs are what you are looking for. on the other hand if you want something that actually puts out anything that is concidered to be musical, then you should look for something like PG, Diamond Audio, or JL Audio (just naming a few off the top of my head). they can be had for the same price range.
the older audiobahn stuff is ok. and when i say older i mean before they started to mass produce and sell their shit on every website known to man. i had 2 od the older audiobahn amps and i had no problems with them, but i have had cheaper amps that were far supperior quality (that is why i say they are overpriced) and the same goes with their subs, i had 2 of the older subs, and they were ok (they did what i wanted them to do, and that was make noise) but i have had FAR superior subs for the same price. case in point all of my PG stuff and Diamond Audio stuff.
