Troy-remember, those people you are bitching about are like 90% of this board, doesn't seeing them in person make you wonder why there are more immature fuckwads screwing up the local scene?Dear fastfood workers that bitch about how hard the job is:
Your job isn't hard. It isn't even a real job. If you think this job sucks wait until you get a real one. I get so fucking sick of people talking about how hard it is. Let me tell you something, I am a trained chef, I work at Red Lobster. I've been in the food industry for 7 years, I WOULD GLADLY TAKE YOUR JOB ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. Quit the bitching./rant (sorry, woke up on the wrong side of the bed)
EDIT FOR CLARITY: I have no problem with fast food workers. I have a major problem with fast food workers who bitch constantly about how hard their job is!
Want to switch jobs with me? Your bitching about cooking lobsters and shit. Im a god damned commercial plumber, and if you think its nothing but putting in some pipes your wrong. I work just as hard if not harder then most construction workers out there, and get covered in SHIT sometimes. Try digging a trench in clay 6ft deep 5ft wide and 35ft long by hand because you cant get a backhoe inside the building your working in. Ever swung a pick axe or used a shovel so long you cant hold your arm out in front of you at the end of the day? Doubtfull. If the money wasnt so awsome id quit.
So quit being a hypocrit because your job isnt that hard either.

you're not comparing apples to apples here... we are talking about the customer service, and restaraunt management field.
I agree with troy that there are areas for improvement at every fast food restaraunt. But think about it, how many times have you ever received superior customer service at a fast food restaraunt. I can't think of any times that impressed me enough to stick out in my mind. Bottom line is it's an entry level position, with usually younger employees. People put up with a lower level of customer service because they want to go somewhere quick, and less expensive, and for that you will see areas where other things are cut. One thing is labor, and extensive customer service training.
-
I agree that we should be taught customer service, at least managers. Actually there is NO training (at least for mcdonalds) in the customer service area for managers even, nothing more basic than the average joe schmoe already knows. That alone would help i think. I also think being able to talk back to customers would be a good thing too. The way things go now you just have to take all the abuse you get and suck it up, which sucks. The old days you always hear about sound much better, where someone who deserved something got it, and the giver didnt have to worry about being sued for every little thing. Its a complicated situation and both sides have valid arguments when it comes down to it.
-
haha..... NO you don't want to talk back to your customers. One of the arts of customer service/customer relations is being able to diffuse the situation, and not necessarily doing so by offering compensation or free things. The more you do it, the more you learn what works, and what doesn't. Sometimes if you can break a person down, all they are really looking for is someone to listen to their problem, so they can get it off their chest. Sometimes they are just letting you know, so that it won't happen again.

and sometimes people just need a swift kick in the ass. When you yell at us for having to wait for 34 seconds (yes it happens, check the time slip to see when the order was taken vs what time it is now and its 34 secodns or so sometimes) you have issues and need to be shot in the face several times. And then puked on.

Ahhh we dont normally give them freebies at the drop of a hat. But seriously what would you do in a situation like this:
This slightly handicapped girl that works at my mcdonalds was on counter. Some bitch and her nasty ass bitch daughter who is probably ... 10? come in all the time and are shitheads. They order plain doubles, take ketchup packets, put the ketchup on the doubles and then return them to us and complain that we made them wrong, its like they get off on doing that to us. ANyways.........This girl cant speak very well/clearly (jackie howland for those that know her) and the daughter was folding/bending the counter menus and jackie asked her nicely to stop playing with it please. She did for about 5 seconds then started again, and jackie asked her again nicely to stop, and i seriously believe its impossible for jackie to look, sound, or be mean at all. The girl stops again, and then starts right back up and drops it on the floor and jackie asks her AGAIN to stop playing with it please. Then the mom chimes in and tells jackie "Just leave the poor girl alone and do youre job, stop worrying what my daughter does" or some shit like that and does it in the bitchiest meanest voice ever because shes a skank bitch. Jackie just started crying and went in the back and cried for about 5 minutes because of the stupid skank bitch, who then wanted us to give her free food because of the ordeal like it was our fault. She comes in ALL THE FUCKING TIME and trys to pull shit like this. People like that i dont give a shit what their problems are or what is in them that is crying out or whateve ryou want to call it, the only way i want to let that out is with a 12 gauge to the stomach, razor blades to the eyes, and toothpicks under the fingernails. Just to watch them sit there and twitch and quiver would make my day because shes such a fuckin...gahh...can you tell im pissed? Just thinking about this lady makes me want to shoot something. God knows the only reason she keeps comming back is to get off by making our day miserable because the average joe fuck would not come back if the service was that bad every time.

this is the 1% of people though.... in a situation like that. Sometimes it IS OK to ask a customer to please not return to your place of business. I have taken a stance before and told a guest that they treated my employee inapproprately, and make them aware of what happens. If it continues to happen I would ask her to please not return to your place of business. Sometimes it IS better to lose a customer here and there, because all they are doing is taking more time with your employees, and creating scenes in your workplace. I would make ALL employees aware of the situation when she comes in, like have a manager personally watch the employee make the burger, and hand it to them, and then if they complain the manager can step in and see no, it was right. There is a point where management needs to step in and do their job!

To someone like that the absolute best way to handle the situation is to treat them like they're your best friend and be overly polite...that pisses people off.

been there done that, she just gets worse. One time ill be let off around the time shes leaving and ill follow her wherever she drives just to scare her, and i dont care if she calls me in and i get pulled over, because i hate that bitch.
