That does sound like a lot of fun. I want to go watch. Does it cost anything to be spectator?

Nope No Cage NEEDED, but for the harness sometimes it's smart to get a harness bar, or someting along those lines, although, in the tracks that i'm going too, you just need standard safety equipment, and a helmet, maybe because they're not timed, they're session that are meant to let a person get used to their car, and supposedly non competitive, as in telling a faster car what side to pass you on, and passing only on straights, so on........I Didn't Know that they can still run in Brainerd, otherwise i woulda been all over that, i'm gonna have to look into that.........

Mid America is in Nebraska. EDIT Iowa actually. 20 minutes from Omaha.

Road America is in WI, and Gingerman is in MI.

This is the club I am part of http://www.nordstern.org/index.html

You need to be part of the club to participate in the events. They run a lot of different tracks, but I just do BIR and Road America.

Our first Fling of 2005 was April 22nd, you had to go to this event, because it is the driver traing session and you train with a instructor to handle the car and the track. After that event they will sign you off and you will be able to run all the events by yourself, That first even is 3 days, friday-sunday, it total you get about 3 hours a day to run the track, split into 4 or 5 sessions. There are also time trials to see how fast you are.

We ran Road American July 11-12th 2005. Very fun track, scarey as hell the first few times, but really fun. My camaro was a blast to run this year.

I wouldn't mind running with some of you guys. I plan running a Fiero and a Corvette this year. I also will get to run a Porsche GT3 Cup car in a few of the club races, I have been trained and certified to run the race cars.

It is a hell of a lot of fun and if you can afford it and have a relaible car, you guys will have a blast. only went off track 3 times last season, and it sure is a trip going off at over 120mph. On BIR my camaro did 155mph going down the straight, and I take corner 1 at over 120mph.

There was talk of BIR being closed for 2006, but It looks like it will still be open.

I've roadraced bikes at BIR, Road America (Elkhart Lake) and Hallet (OK) and there aren't too many things that are more fun than road racing. But to run tracks like these with your street car is going to get very expensive. Tires and brakes will be the first things to go, especially at BIR or Road America. Thats if your engine stays together, as you'll get topped out on the straight at Brainerd, and there are two straights on Road America where you'll get topped out. Then there is the possibility of making a mistake, running over the curbing if you come in too hot is probably gonna bust up the underside of your car, or if you really screw up you can bang into the armco... not good. It would be a blast to roadrace cars too, but I see it being just too expensive. I guess maybe you could just drive around the track at ~50% and your equipment would last, but what fun is that?

                    😛 😛 😛

dont worry, i am expecting to be buying tires alot and brakes. and my car isnt really going to be a "street car". My motor should hold up seeing how it is being assembled as we speak. I get to drop the pistons in it tomorrow and will hopefully have it running next week. Brakes, suspension, tires, clutch, and safety are getting upgraded this winter.

also how are you part of that club if oyu dont own a porsche?

the drag strip portion will be open at least (for the next 5 or 6 years).. not sure if they're going to keep running track events or not though. I've heard complaints that the track surface really isn't up to par.

For the last 2 years I've wanted to run PDE with Donnybrook/MNFbody, but haven't done it (last year it was at MAM.... too far to drive with the possibility of breaking AND the $220 admission)...
and then I'm not too confident in some parts on my car above the 100MPH mark (I've run 120+ fine before, but not for any period of time)...

one of these years (depending what I"m driving)

it will depend on your car...

Brainerd straight is just under a mile.. should be able to hold a little bit of speed out of 10 (pretty well banked) and turn 1 can be taken fairly fast (I hear one of the TCStangs guys in his track prepped 95 Cobra R runs through that at WOT, which has to be close to 150)....
so if you have enough power to get to your top speed in that time...it'll depend what your top speed is.

I've got videos around here of IIRC an impala running up over 140.. don't remember what the F-bodies did in the videos I have...

that's the thing that scares me about the longer courses. You make a mistake on Brainerd and it's going to be a big mistake.

Pretty much as fast as your car will go... at BIR they got my 1000 on radar at 172 mph, at Road America there are two spots were you get up to top speed.
