Got this in an email from a co worker......

    Interesting thought for the day:

If you consider that there have been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months and a total of 2,112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000. The rate in Washington, D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in our Nation's Capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: We should immediately pull out of Washington, D.C.

that's not accurate - its blurs the line b/w monthly deaths and yearly deaths.

          google is your friend:

The annual D.C. murder rate was actually down a bit in 2004 to 35.8
per 100K. In 2003, the rate was 44.2 per 100K.
          http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_04/documents/04tbl05a.xls
          http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_03/xl/03tbl05.xls

Current Iraq-DC Email says 2,154 deaths in 22 months. That means 98
deaths per month or 1,175 per year. With a population of 160,000
troops, that yields an annual rate of 734 per 100K.

As for determining how many of the murders in D.C. were by gunfire,
one would have to rely upon some extrapolation. The BJS has a lot of
          detailed info.
          http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/weapons.htm
          http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/tables/weaponstab.htm

If one adds up the first two columns, handguns and other guns, then in
2002 [across all of America] 66.8 percent of all murder victims died
          from gunfire.

Actually, I would venture to guess that less than 3/4, maybe even less than 1/2 of the soldier deaths in Iraq are due to gunfire, a lot are prob due to explosions/schrapnel (I could google, but I'm too lazy). Anyway, I'd bet that the odds of getting shot in DC are a lot closer to the odds of getting shot in Iraq than anyone would care for them to be.

              😛

An American is having his coffee, croissant, bread, butter & jam when
an Iranian man, chewing gum, sits down next to him.

The American ignores the Iranian who nonetheless starts a
                conversation:

Iranian: "You Americans eat the whole bread?"

American (in a bad mood): "Of course we do."

Iranian (after blowing a bubble): "We don't. In Iran, we only eat
what's inside. The crust we collect in a container, recycle it, transform
them into croissants, and sell them to America."
The Iranian has a smirk on his face.

                The American listens in silence.

The Iranian persists: "Do you eat jelly with the bread??"

                American: "Of course."

Iranian (cracking his gum between his teeth and chuckling): "We
don't. In Iran we eat fruit for breakfast. Then we put all the peels, seeds,
and leftovers in containers, recycle them, transform them into jelly, and
                sell the jelly to America."

Then the American asks: "Do you have sex in Iran?"

Iranian: "Why of course we do," the Iranian says with a big smirk.

American: "And what do you do with the condoms once you've used
                them?"

Iranian: "We throw them away, of course."

American: "We don't. In America, we put them in a container, recycle
them, melt them down into chewing gum, and sell the gum to Iran."

He said deaths, not murders. He is saying the chances of dying, not being murdered, are better in D.C.

I said this on a forum a LONG time ago, and I think someone copied me and actually researched it.
