Best Buy Rant
-
I have boughten both my Computers (Desktop/Laptop) from best buy.. I normally deny the ext'd warranty claims.. they aren't worth it imo.. when they are, in a sense, the price is quite high..
These guys aren't on commission so to sell you a computer won't make a diff. in pay to them....
The extended warranties they offer, they get documented on I'm sure.. so if they don't sell them, they prolly get chew'd out by the mgr, etc. etc. for all we know..
Most ext. warranties are pure profit for companies like Best Buy..
usually only extends manuf. warranty.. nothing really great about that, cuz by the time it expires anyways; you may be into looking for a new computer, since yours is outdated.. -
yeah but with an extended warranty if your computer breaks and its obsolete a lot of times they give you a newer model equivalent to the level your old one was at the time...extended warranties are good for computers in all honesty...they do break a lot...like i said ive gone through 4 mobos in my dell in a little over a year...that warranty has already more than paid for itself...
-
true.. I had one laptop go to crap on me.. but that was becuz It was an interal problem..
the part where the plug in goes to, the prong broke off, so it was hard to work w/ later the screen would stay black, then they gave me a new one, luckily by warranty; but sometimes stuff like that you wonder if it would of been covered under the warranty anyways.. -
is Joel that really big guy? (that guy's a freakin tool.. thank god I"ve never dealt with him, but it's sad listening to the bullshit he starts with when trying to sell to the incompitent)
I bought a Toshiba in there about a month ago (reluctant, but easily cheaper than anything else I could find online suprisingly) and had 3 different people tell me 3 different things...
I just kinda smiled and nodded at what most of them said, bought my laptop, and went home.

same.
went in. denied all the shit. had him unlock the lil door beneath the display he borught it up front and off i went

not to steal the thread but i would prefer not to be ripped off by this guy
ok guys i think i delt with the guy like two nights ago when i bought a laptop. i ended up gettin a gateway and now i see there is a sony for sale that i wanted. heres what i need help with. they guy i talked to said that the gateway was way better and that i shouldnt wait for the sony to go back on sale. granted the sony has 60 gb and the gateway has 80gb. i ended up gettin that 118 dollars anti everything because the guy said that i should not at all log onto the internet without it and got the 300 dollar option for the coverage(which i think is a good program). well let me know what you would do. (spent alittle over 1300 on the gateway just for reference) Would it be worth the re-stocking fee bs to return it and get something more worth while?
here are the two computers
sony

Hmm, restocking fee sucks. But, I don't know. I'd stick with the gateway, and return all that anti-crap. It's all just bullshit that will sit in your memory and suck up your resources, unless your on of those idiots that thinks a 300kb .exe file is something that you want to open on your comp LOL. You got screwed on that shit. They are trained to tell you that you NEED it, you need that shit about as much as you need some electrodes hooked to your testicles. I have a couple of friends in the IT industry. Tho the sony VAIO is a nice ass laptop. Either way, get rid of that anti-shit.
-See you on the pavement.

Yes, Joel was a fat fuck. BIG guy, and fat as hell, he waddled like a duck. Reminded me of the guy with tits at the start of Fight Club. Bob.
Anyway, he went on to tell me that I couldn't install any programs becuase the computer needed RAM. I was like umm.. what the hell does installing programs have to do with ram usage. Then he told me that if I put more RAM in I'd have to purchase a best buy service plan, I was like umm... wtf? Then he went on to say all this other shit, basically he knows jack shit about computers and I feel terrible for the poor old people who get pwn3d by this guy.
That is ok though, becuase I was pissed off I spurged and bought:
3.2ghz Dual Core Pentium 4
2gb DDR 667mhz Ram
640gb (Dual RAID 0, 320gb Drives)AND:

A Dell 24" Widescreen LCD. It's pimp, you can view two video sources at once, and it lets you do picture in picture, and it rotates to portrait mode.

well I didnt' read this whole thing, but best buy is the spawn of satan!!! the one in fargo tried to tell me I couldn't tell the positive from ground on a speaker if I installed it myself...

Hmm.. I have a desktop w/ the AMD_Athlon 64 bit 3500+ I also have a recently newly purchased Gateway Laptop w/ the centrino.. The processor speed of the sony is a lil faster than my laptop and the processor speed of my desktop is a lil faster than the gateway..
All I know is my desktop outperforms my laptop by far.. But it also has twice the Ram
However, the centrino battery life is what I like, since it's based mostly on the fact it's just needed the essentials and good battery life.. 3+ hours on the centrino; prolly from my research about 1 1/2 hrs on that AMD
I want to upgrade my ram on the laptop to really compare the two, but for multitasking; I like my desktop..
Both will seem like decent laptops; just depends on if you are more of a multi-tasker or if you want longer battery life.. -
Looks to be you got a better computer in the end neways; and 640GB wow.. I got 250 and I thought that was overkill, can't ever have enough ram though..
what kind of vid-card you going to be running..? -
your desktop will outperform a laptop of the same specs 9times outta 10...centrino is kind of a crock of shit really...the only thing that makes it "centrino" is the M proccessor and the wireless card...i guarantee i can get the same battery life out of my laptop(with new battery) as someone with the same laptop with the centrino bullshit...if you have a laptop with a desktop chip of course the battery life is gonna suck...thats used to running on a basically unlimited power supply...also that 64 bit processor isnt good for shit unless your running 64 bit windows and 64 bit software....gateway has really cheaped up since they almost dropped outta the market...a couple years ago i wouldnt have recommended anything else BUT a gateway...you need to remember the processor/video and on board stuff like that is more important to buy right away than a bigger hd/more ram etc cause that stuff can be upgraded easier than a processor(it can be done but a lot of times the specs of the board etc cause it to be a pain in the ass)...
-
Ya.. Well I bought my Laptop for general purpose reasons, don't use it for gaming, etc..
However it does have a DVD+RW; and.. what not.. and a decent 80 gig..
Battery life is good though.. boot up is kind of slow

I understand what you guys are saying, but really...you can not judge a company on one bad employee. There are many companies that have one or more bad employees. When I bought my laptop, the guy that helped me was Cody, and he was very helpful, didn't try to sell me bullshit or anything like that. It is all in who you get to help you. I think Best Buy is an awesome store that has a lot of different items to shop for. And seeing that Media Play is going out of business, Best Buy will be one of the few electronic stores left. BTW...was in Media Play last night and some guy bought a life size Halo statue for $1025, after 70% off...does anyone know how much they origionally sell for in the beginning. Good luck with your Dell Jim!

i think cody sold me my laptop to. i just flat out said gimme the laptop i dont want anything else besides your 3 yr warranty for extra.
he went to do somethin and another salesman kept askin me questions "what do you use for anti spyware" i said ad aware, he says some cheesy line like ad aware was rated 5th outta 6th programs, and spysweeper was ranked 1st and it can be yours for 30 bucks. i said nah.
i came home and downloaded spysweeper anyways.

It sucks to hear about a bad experience like that, I know i've a few at some other stores but best buy has always seemed to be a good experience for me. I bought a vaio pc a while back, no problems whatso ever, then again I had cash in hand at the time. I haven't had anything computer oriented done there except buying some games since then though. I've always had peope ask if I needed help though. If I'm in there in the future to buy anything I'll just try to avoid that bastard. Who needs to buy antivirus software anyways when you can pirate.....um I mean download it off the internet.

also on a side note, you would be amazed at some of the uber fuck-ups that best buy makes with thier geek squad team when they're 'fixing' people's computers. then people take them to me and i get to undo the damage by best buy. my personal recommendation...do NOT ever have the geek squad work on your computer.
